Fermostat® Dual-stage Programmable Thermostat

SKU# 40248

Flat Rate Shipping only $7.99 only from Northern Brewer

Introducing the first-ever programmable fermentation thermostat. The dual-stage Fermostat® plans ahead so you don’t have to, scheduling every stage of fermentation. Not only does the Fermostat® maintain and change temperature, it changes the temperature at the pace you decide—you can program the duration of temperature transitions!

Fermostat® is as good as set-it-and-forget it gets. Program your fermentation on as long of a timeline as your recipe requires. Complex lager fermentations that normally require constant supervision can be completely automated. As the first-ever intelligent fermentation thermostat, it learns the characteristics of your heating and cooling elements to correct temperature before it’s outside the desired range. Fermostat® minimizes temperature oscillations to ensure your yeast stay strong and healthy.

You don’t have to sacrifice customization to enjoy the benefits of Fermostat®. Internal memory allows you to write and store specific fermentation schedules for each beer brewed, customizable for your own recipes and methods. Create programs to automate cold crash, diacetyl rest, lagering and free rise.

power cord melted
Had it for about 3 years. Menu is hard to navigate through and since the software update its had bugs and issues and likes to stop working. Recently found the power cord melted inside the controller and now it is shorted out. $150 Junk. Lets see if I hear from the company. Wont buy again!

Don't waste your money
Purchased this unit and the program froze on the first scheduled temp change. Exchanged the item for a new one. Second one froze on the home screen after one day.
Great idea but bad software. Save you money and buy a less expensive PID controller

Don't Buy
Don't buy this item. Unfortunately, this item is no longer being updated. I spoke to the owner and creator of the controller and he told me that he doesn't have the time to fix the many issues with the software. A new firmware update hasn't been released since August 2015 and it doesn't look like he is planning on making any improvements anytime soon.

Not ready for prime time
Many listed features still not available (in development) and software has a lot of bugs. There is a beta version of software that was released 10/2015 and nothing has been updated since. Lots of missed deadlines from the developer who answers all concerns with with 'soon'. The main reason I got it was for the data logging which is one of the coming soon features. Not pleased with the current incarnation of the device and speed of development does not look promising. So much potential but not ready for general release.

The Fermostat is nice in that it switches from cool to heat without having to switch a jumper. Just set the temp and you're golden. That's where it ends though. I've had nothing but trouble with just about every other feature. There seems to be no support either. Buyer beware!

Bumpy Start, but Promising...
I'm pretty sure this will do what I need it to do (regulate both hot and cold temps, allow more complicated fermentation schedules including naturally rising temperatures, etc., although I haven't gotten that far yet. Out of the box though, it takes some effort and detective work. Like any new piece of brewing gear, I rip it out of the box and hook it up expecting it to work perfectly. This was not the case (e.g., the hot side was not working, error messages). I went to the web site and downloaded the manual which was not included with the unit. However, the manual did not line up with the unit I had (starting to get frustrated!). Then I saw the note that said I had to update the firmware using a uSD card (also not included). I went to Best Buy and got a uSD card and was able to update the firmware easy enough. Now the manual makes sense. Overall, if you want out-of-the-box simple, this is not for you. Get the Ranco two-stage unit. Much easier. If you are more patient and like to tinker and program, this unit provides more options that are great. That said, I recommend the manufacturer put in a single-page, easy to find in the packaging Quick Start Guide that clarifies: Step 1: Firmware must be updated, how to do it, and that a uSD card is required. Step 2: Download the manual and only then start tinkering. Also, I recommend the unit ships with the heat plug enabled (not disabled) as I would assume people want this, otherwise they would by the cheaper version. Finally, Caleb at Ohnmbrew was very responsive and answered my questions quickly and cheerfully. He is the right guy.

I love this temperature controller
Endless possibilities to program whatever you want. To brew any style you want. Any time of the year.I am in the middle of doing my first lager beer, and the controller is doing everything for me. No constant monitoring of what the temperature is now.Gradual temperature changes keep your yeast from going into shock. This is the best homebrew temperature controller out there right now.

My favorite new brew tool
This was a Christmas splurge for me and I don't regret a penny of it. The dual control and programming are what drew me in. The temperature control and ease of use have made me a very happy camper. I may be a gadget geek but this piece gives me the freedom to brew whatever style I want at any time of the year, stress free

Is this just a controller, or does it have a heater/cooler?
C O on Jun 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is just a controller. It has both a female plug for connection to a cooler (user supplied) and a female plug for a heat (user supplied). I have a freezer connected to the cooling plug and a wrap around heater connected to the heater plug. It has a pre-programmed program for both a typical lager and a typical Ale. (Of course, you can program it to do just about anything).
Does this have a SSR relay?
Mark V on Jan 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm pretty sure it uses electromechanical relays because there is an audible click when the circuits are cycled.
I didn't get operation with fermostat

BEST ANSWER: Feel free to respond here with order information and details on what the fermostat is doing. We're happy to help get it working.
How do I get my Ohmbrew to go to the heat cycle? I'm plugged into heat and set a temp of 155F, but the controller tells me it is in the cooling mode. At 155 it turns off the heater, but when it gets below 155, it doesn't turn back on. I don't have my instruction pamphlet
