Works great
I like this hop spider because of the large 6” diameter that extends all the way down, unlike other designs which taper down at the bottom. This a very fine mesh so it eliminates a lot of the hop mess. However, it is so fine that I’m considering dumping the 60 minute hop addition before adding the later additions because the 60 minute addition seems to dam up the screen a bit. Right now I just pick up the spider and swish it around when I add the later additions. Having a handle makes that a breeze. Very easy to clean, rinse with a hose and soak in PBW when you soak your pot.

Worth Every Penny
I love this thing! I use it with my Grainfather and it’s as advertised. The handle is an added bonus and makes clean up simple and easy.

Lack of Quality... Disappointing!
I just received my Green Widow, and was excited to open it and check it out, as I had a brew day planned and couldn’t wait to try it! I must tell you, however, I'm quite disappointed in the overall craftsmanship and quality, especially at this price. The screen is bubbled/bowed at the bottom ring. It's difficult to tell if it's actually separated. I certainly hope that it isn't, considering the price of this product! I’m wondering if I made a mistake by applying the old, “more expensive is better” rule! I’ve seen less expensive hop spiders, of significant better quality, that cost half the price of the Green Widow. Well you live and you learn. I’ll give it a shot, but if the screen is in fact not attached properly to the bottom ring, and it separates after use, I am going to be highly agitated! I would think that NB would quality control all of the merchandise they sell, prior to shipping to their customers. Well, more to come, because if this expensive hop spider fails, you can be sure I’ll post a follow-up review!

Not happy with this product
Poorly constructed. The handle fell off after first use. I would suggest you find a better method of securing the handle. All the screws backed out and wound up in my wort.

Great product. Fits my 6 gallon kettle perfectly and is used for both steeping and hop boil.

One fatal flaw
Fits my 20 gallon kettle well and will hold a lot of hops. Functioned well for a 10 gallon batch and 6 oz hops. Would probably not work as well for me with a 5 gallon batch in this same equipment and more than 4 oz hops. 1 star rating for fatal flaw, with 6 oz previously wet and drained hops I lifted by the handle and tilted to removed from drained kettle. The handle popped right off spraying the screws across the room and the basket splashed back into the trub. Had this been a boiling kettle it could have resulting in injury. Simple fix for manufacturer but for the price I expected better. I plan to use 3 stainless steel screws and nuts to fix the handle to the basket for future use.

Green Widow kills beer
Upon opening my Green Widow and inspecting I notice the screw for the handle are loose. They are not able to be tightened. It is too tall for my five gallon pot to hang so it sits on the bottom. While adding hop pellets to my wort I notice that a lot of hops are escaping and my wort is really cloudy. I continue to boil. When finished I place the pot in the sink and lift the spider to drain the hop juice back into the wort. The handle breaks and the rivets fall into the hops and wort. The spider falls into my wort causing a major splash of wort and hops to cover my counter and cabinets. I'm very disappointed with the first experience and feel I may have had better results using the bags I have been using for the past several years. I'll repair this with some stainless nuts and bolts and try again but, again, very disappointed and hope my beer turns out.

How long is the rubberized handle? Could the end be bent to fit over a keg rim?
A shopper on Oct 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would not recommend bending the Green Widow Hop Spider. It is really designed with a boil kettle in mind. Assuming you are referencing a converted keg kettle it would depend on how much of the top was removed.
is it 14" including the handle or not? if not, how high is the handle?
A shopper on Jan 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The height from the bottom of the basket to the top of the basket is about 13 3/4”. From the bottom of the basket to the top of the handle is about 19 1/2”. When hanging over the side of a brew kettle the bottom of the basket will be about 13 3/4” below the kettle rim.

I’ve used it with pellet hops and it works great. In the past I’ve used a hop bag and this is easier to deal with when making hop additions and draining off the spent hops at end of boil.
So you would put all your hop additions and whatever else in this? will this effect the flavor at all?
A shopper on Nov 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It a great way to keep hops and other boil addition from getting transfer over into the beer. You will get the same flavor in the end plus the easy of just lifting it out at the end of the boil.
I have a 15 gallon blichmann boilermaker. I often use it for five gallon batches. Will this sit deep enough in my kettle? You should be able to slide the spider up and down to fit different size kettles right?
Luke G on Nov 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is not adjustable. The hooks that grab the edge of the pot are welded in place. I have an 8 gallon pot that has about 3/4 inch clearance to the bottom when this is hooked on the edge.
Will this hop spider work with the grainfather allowing you to close the lid during boil?
A shopper on Jan 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I use this with my Grandfather, but the lid does not seal when this is in use during the boil.
How well does this work with pellet hops?
A shopper on Dec 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It works very well. The screen is fine enough to contain the hops. Helps a lot to keep out a lot of debris. Easy to clean in the faucet.
My experience with SS screens is that they foul with trub protein and hop material and that prevents wort from flowing through properly. Is this a problem with the Green Widow as well?
A shopper on Jan 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is less of an answer than a confirmation. I have consistantly experienced blinding of screens or bags that effectively reduces the hop utilization and the flow of wort through the device. I would be concerned that anything that is fine enough to contain pellet debris would coat up rather quickly.
Has anyone come up with a resolution for the lack of length / reliability with the screws on this piece? I have the same issue where even after tightening they still come loose / fall out....

I use a Sentinel Boil Over screen on top of my boil kettle, looks like this will NOT work with the Sentinal, since the Sentinel hangs over the side of pot,and will hit the handle of the Green Widow....anyone experience that? ALSO...has anyone used the Green Hop AND a mesh bag in combo for double filtering,or is that just overkill?THANKS
