Good kit but instructions out of date and sweetener too sweet
My wife bought me the full starter kit for Christmas and I just finished my first batch. Unfortunately, like another reviewer said, the instructions were outdated and didn't match the ingredients. In addition, my siphon broke in stage 2 of the process. And in the end, when I added the full package of sweetener, the cider was just way too sweet to be drinkable (I guess I should have read some of these reviews first).
I would like to give it a shot again if Northern Brewer is willing to supply the ingredients and a new siphon.

Make sure...
Unfortunately, The printed instructions that came with my kit were outdated and didn't match the ingredients in the kit received. I logged into the site too late to realize that the instructions that are online are very different than what was sent to me. For one, the printed instructions had me using Bentonite in Step 2, while the kit didn't come with bentonite. Instead, the kit included ingredients that were not in the included recipe like two packets of yeast, and different gel packs. Only after I had started my primary (had to research what Kieselol and Chitosan would be used for, as they were not mentioned in the instructions) did I think to look online. Yup, there it was, the instructions that matched my kit.
I'm pretty sure this batch is ruined, so my advice to all - Make sure that your instructions match your ingredients. Was hoping this kit would be easier to use.

Cider Kit, First time trial.
This kit was easy to use, the recipe and timeline worked exactly as I hoped it would. Cider is in finishing stage right now, clearing nicely. Scanned box to make label for gallon jug. Came out 6.5 ABV

grolsch style bottle will not accept fizz drops!
After brewing my first batch of beer my wife expressed how much she liked cider. I purchased this kit, followed instructions and even bought special clear â??grolschâ?? style bottles. Important lesson learned - fizz drops donâ??t fit into these bottles. We broke them up and hoped we got all of each drop into the bottle. Two weeks later - great taste but no fizz. A little bummed but willing to drink another home-brewed Caribou Slobber from the same style brown bottle and try again

A bit sweet, although still enjoyable.
A little bit too sweet if all the sweetener is used, although still enjoyable. Great kit to introduce someone to brewing.

Terrible product!
Our batch came out disgusting! It was so disappointing because we use northern brewer for our wine making supplies all the time! But this product was definitely not worth the money.

Response from Northern Brewer
We spoke the other day and are replacing the cider kit at no charge. It turned out too sweet because the whole sweetening packet was used. Most prefer it semi sweet or off dry and so this time I would recommend using 1/4 - 1/2 packet.

Powerful Sweetener
This cider was pretty easy to make! I added some yeast nutrient to the must due to some sulfur experiences in past ciders, and gave it a few extra weeks in secondary. It finished crystal clear. However, I added about 3/4 of the sweetening packet and racked to a small keg - it was overwhelmingly sweet and had that distinct artificial flavor. This does not seem to mellow over time and I even tried racking in a dry mead to add more volume and make a semi-cyser, but the flavor still persists. I would add the sweetener with great caution and sample before adding to the overall batch.

A bit expensive for 10 bottles, but it did taste very good! Sort of a spiced cider taste to it. Cleared up very nice; even without the gels. Also did not use the artificial sweetener. A nice intro course for someone starting out on cider.

with the others on the sweetener
Don't use the sweetener, it ruined my batch as well, even half is too much. I feel like the cider was OK otherwise but probably not worth trying again for the cost for such a small batch

Response from Northern Brewer
Thanks for the review! Despite the size, the sweetening pack is very powerful and allows everyone to find the flavor that they like best. To make a "dry" cider, do not use any of the sweetener. If you prefer a slightly less dry cider, use a quarter of the packet.

Grimhilde Hard Cider
Pretty good stuff. I used the whole sweetener pack and the finished product was a bit too sweet. Next time I'll go half or 3/4. This is a good cider kit for experimenting with flavor additions. I'm happy with it.

What is the sweetener that is used in this kit?
A shopper on Oct 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The sweetener pack provided in the kit is a non-fermentable sweetener, Sucralose. It needs to be a non-fermentable sweetener, or it would cause overcarbonation issues in the bottles.
So I'm paying $30 for just 1 gallon of cider and I have to make it? Am I reading this correctly? I pay about the same for a 5 gallon of beer
B L on Apr 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If you buy the whole Grimhilde crooked apple hard cider recipe kit it includes a bag of cider, a dry wine yeast, some sweetener and a few other additives to make a 1 gallon batch of hard cider. Yes, it is $30 which seems a little pricey for a 1 gallon recipe, and yes you can easily go out and just buy beer, but the whole point of purchasing it just like many of the other stuff on northern brewer is for people who enjoy creating a good drink out of their own home. It is a fun hobby and sometimes hobbies cost money.

Hopefully they make a 5 gallon batch soon.
Are the primary and/or secondary jugs included in the kit?
A shopper on Dec 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No! You have to buy a small batch kit!
Are replacement ingredients available, or is this a one time use?
A shopper on Nov 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is the replacement ingredient kit for the Crooked Apple® Hard Cider Starter Kit.

If you also need the equipment to get started in 1G cider making, get the Crooked Apple® Hard Cider Starter Kit which has this ingredient kit plus the basic equipment you need to make hard cider.

My purchased kit was missing the directions and the yeast. I found the directions online but I am wondering what yeast I should use. I have some SafAle US-05 on hand. Will that work? Or should I being using Champagne yeast? Thanks.
N I on Jun 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello Jerry,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! I am sorry that you did not receive instructions or yeast with your kit. You can use either of those yeasts, the champagne will make for a dryer cider, and the US-05 will turn out a little more estery and fruity. We can also send you the Safcider that was meant to be in that kit if you would like. Let me know and I will get that yeast out to you! Sorry for the trouble!
Is the resulting cider gluten free? I'm brewing this now and a co-worker would like some for his wife but she has severe Ciliac disease. Thank you
M A on Mar 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The ingredients do not include gluten, but we cannot say that this product is guaranteed to be gluten-free because it is processed in a facility where gluten products are also processed. However, the addition of Super Kleer should remove most (if not all) incidental gluten.
Can you use 22oz bottles?
A shopper on Dec 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. Use 2 carbonation drops in 22oz bottles to get the right amount of carbonation.
My kit did not come with the Bentonite. Can I skip this addition or do I need the bentonite?
R G on Jul 14, 2016

Thank you for your question. Yes it would be ok to skip the bentonite.

Missed my OG reading. Anybody know what it is supposed to be?

Hello, I purchased a small batch Crooked Apple kit while in the shop on September 5th. There was no yeast in the box, no fizz drops and no directions. Is it possible to get the directions online and re the yeast, I can look locally first, but will likely need to order. Regarding the fizz drops, we've tried these for beer and have had varied results, is there another way to obtain the carbonation, such as boiling dextrose? Finally regarding the yeast I likely would have killed the yeast anyway as I left the kits I purchased in my van and it got hot. Thanks for your assistance.
