Be sure to calibrate
Love the durability of this hydrometer. Be sure to calibrate, as my hydrometer is off 0.002. I appreciate the finer scale of measurement I get with this hydrometer.

is off by 3 points.
What's the point of a "precision" hydrometer when it's inaccurate? Not just a little bit either, when tested against a calibrated hydrometer it is off by 3 gravity points. Worthless.

Beware - Ours was not calibrated.
I do not recommend.

We immediately found this hydrometer to be inaccurate. We tested it in distilled water and it gave an inaccurate reading of 1.002 rather than 1.000.

Buyer beware on this product. Test before you rely on it.

Response from Northern Brewer
Thanks for the review. We suggest that all testing equipment should be calibrated prior to use. Environmental differences can require scale adjustments. Customer Service will be following up on this review.

Cheap quality
When they started selling these a year or so ago they were glass and good quality. After managing to break one I discovered they were now plastic. I also discovered accuracy is no longer a priority either. The one I bought was 3 points off. Managed to lose it before I could return it. The next one was 2 points off. Tried returning that today, but the 2 in stock were 2 and 3 points off (tested at the store). $15 for a measuring tool that's consistently not accurate is not worth the money. Once I get me hands on a good one elsewhere I'll be returning this (again).

Good product with no information
Recently purchased two Herculometer hydrometers with ranges 0.980-1.020 and 1.000-1.070. Neither came with any instruction and, in particular, with no indication as to what temperature they were calibrated. Checking with distilled water at 60F, the 1.000-1.070 hydrometer appeared right on, but the 0.098-1.020 hydrometer was off about 2 points. Not sure if the error was due to improper calibration or whether it was calibrated at a different temperature. Some instruction and calibration data would be very helpful.

Does it fit in a standard 100ml sample jar?
A shopper on Mar 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I use a plastic hydrometer tube. The bulb end of the hydrometer is 7/8 inch diameter. 10 1/2 inches long. Nice, easy to read.
Is it safe to say this is shatterproof?
A shopper on Mar 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Great Question. The Herculometer is very durable and will withstand much more then its glass counterpart. Of course under extreme conditions there is a good chance this hydrometer would still break. Being made of polycarbonate means that if it does break you will not have all the small shards of glass.
