Yeast cells are active and living organisms. A slight expansion in Wyeast packaging is normal and does not indicate poor yeast health. Certain strains, including 1056 and 1338, are more prone to expansion than others. Please visit the Wyeast FAQ for more details or enjoy this video with Wyeast microbiologist Greg Doss.

Aroma

Soft bready malt character with very low hop aroma. Fruity esters are up-front with aromas of apple and pear, but balanced with a moderate-low peppery phenolic character. Green tea aromas are present, but quite subdued.

Appearance

Medium golden straw color with very good clarity. A dense brilliantly white foam cap persists to the end of the glass.

Flavor

Soft bready malt flavors back up the complex light fruity esters and restrained peppery flavor, with hints of green tea emerging on the finish. Medium-low alcohol flavors present, but are sweet in nature. Moderate hop bitterness balances the perceived sweetness. Well balanced between esters, phenolics, sweet pilsner malt character, hop bitterness. Green tea flavors are present, but not overpowering.

Mouthfeel

Medium-light body with smooth alcohol warmth. Moderate to high carbonation. Finishes dry, but with no harsh astringency.

Overall Impression

A complex, strong ale that incorporates green tea flavors without masking the base beer’s traditional characteristics. Finishes dry with fruity notes.

Too soon for a final verdict....
I put it in the secondary fermentor yesterday. Prior to the tea's addition, it smelled like a not-heavily-hopped ale. After the matcha, it smelled like tea. Right now, the appearance is not like any other batch I've done. Stay tuned.

Not what I was expecting
All in all this was a fun beer to brew, however it did not turn out as it is pictured.
First off, I'm no master brewer by any means, but my final product came out a lot different than what is shown and described here.
The final product turned out, not a golden color, but a cloudy caramel color. The aroma was a strong smokey scent and the taste was just as smokey. The green tea was not very pronounced and made the beer taste more like dirt than tea.

All in all I can't say I was overjoyed with this beer. It's drinkable the way it came out, but I probably wont buy this again. At least the money went to a good cause.

Do you recommend a yeast starter for this kit?
I A on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I always use a yeast starter. It's not worth the trouble of brewing a beer and finding out there's a problem with the yeast that was used.
