Product details

New Zealand Moteuka Hops are a Saaz descendent with tropical citrus notes. They are a great addition for use for European-style lagers.

With a typical alpha of 6.5-7.5%, these southern hemisphere hop pellets are an excellent variety for single hop bills with multiple applications.

Motueka Tea

I made a 5-gallon batch of single-hopped Motueka "tea" (ale) back in January, going light on the malt (3# of Gold Light extract and 2# of DME) though a bit of grain (4# Belgian Munich Malt and 1# Honey Malt). Overall, four ounces of Motueka hops was enough to balance this brew without overwhelming it. OG was 1.050 and final was 1.016, using one pack of SafeAle S-33. I got lots of glowing remarks, but thought it could use just a touch more hops and malt. Nice session ale.

So, now I'm feeling all macho and creative until I go to a brewery just 70 miles away and they have no fewer than three brews using kiwi hops, particularly Motueka. My psychological re-evaluation is that great minds think alike.

Anyway, it is a versatile hop that can be mixed as desired but is a good single hop as well. It's similar to Saaz though with more citrus and tropical flavors. It came quickly to me and was fresh for the January brewing and yesterday's brewing as well. So, I just brewed with it again heavier on levels but with a single hop ale with just a touch of Galaxy (1 oz) at the beginning of the boil. There are a total of 5 oz of Motueka in this new batch, concentrating on the near-end and end of the boil with 1 oz dry hopped. I've heard it's good not to overhop with Motueka solo.
Cheers!

Love this hop!

This is the perfect hop for brewing a beer with a light, fruity flavor. I use this in my mango flavored brews and it really helps the fruit pop. Great aroma all on its own, too, so don’t feel like you need to pair it with anything to enjoy it.

Completely satisfied with order

One of the challenges in homebrewing is finding all the necessary ingredients for a recipe from one supplier. When you have buy from several outlets, the shipping charges can be significant.

I rank Northern Brewer above average.

Beer is condition now. Pretty soon I'll crack open the IPA I made.
