In a true work of sorcery, the Off the Topper IIPA beer kit creates synergy between yeast and an unprecedented flood of lupulin. Overcoming its intense origins, it is a rare, harmonious pint that is extreme only in its drinkability. Beneath the frothing, massive head lies a beacon of freshness and light in each pint. Popped a bottle this weekend, still needs time to condition a little more. But the taste was still great.

Haven't tasted it yet.
A 9.4 APV!!!!! While pouring Laura's Brew (When a BrewMaster recommends a Kit, without telling me what it is, it get's their name. I have Mike's, Craig's, Tom's, and Deanna's Brews, also.), I spilled some. Me, being a waste not, want not sort of a person, I hovered it up. It tasted like the proverbial "Nectar of the Gods"!! Can't wait for the remaining 1 1/2 to 2 weeks bottling time to pass!

Very Good Beer
My wife got me this starter kit for Christmas. I was less than enthused since I figured the beer would likely turn out badly - flat, tasteless, blah. I was very, very wrong. This is one of the best beers I've ever had. I shared with my friends and they were all thoroughly impressed. I was very impressed with how easy the recipe was, the good quality of all the equipment, and over all awesomeness of beer making. I'm hooked, and Thank you!

Great taste
This was my first home brew. It smells amazing and has plenty of bitterness and sweetness. NBs instructions were pretty straight forward for a beginner. Would definitely recommend it.

A New Brewer with Only One Complaint
After spending months coordinating with family in Vermont, I finally got a hold of the elusive Heady Topper. I had at last harpooned my Moby Dick. After brewing one batch of beer with a one gallon kit that I got, I wanted to try something else and with Northern Brewer's Off the Topper, I would have my chance to "stick it" to the Alchemists for brewing such an unavailable beer. The kit came on time, undamaged, and with instructions. The help line was able to answer my very specific question about how much sugar for my kit in about five minutes. they really know their stuff here. The brewing and fermenting went pretty smoothly and the beer tastes very much like Heady Topper (at least from what I can remember it tasting like.) I only have one issue/complaint with the one gallon kit that I got. I got the one gallon kit because I am new to brewing (I have only made one batch before this one) which means I do not have scales or an eye for what a gram of hops looks like. With this kit there are a lot of hops packets and this can get confusing because you have to add different amounts at different times in the process, which wouldn't be a big deal, if every pack was already weighed out for the spec

Solid Clone
Just finished off drinking this batch along side the inspiration. Easy to follow instructions and it came out great. If you've never had Heady Topper or wish you could get some more...buy this kit and you'll get it.

Not Bad
It tastes pretty good. My batch has a bit of a strange after taste but, all in all is pretty good. Full disclosure I am nit positive I brewed it exactly as it should have been brewed. Will try again for sure!!

BEST ANSWER: This kit will be shipped with crushed grain; the grain is good for 3-5 months with no problem. After that long, the crushed grain may begin to get a little stale. It can still be used, but it's better if brewed up while fresh. All the other components would be good for much longer than that.
Do you have any kits that make 5 gallon?
A shopper on Mar 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi there, we sell this kit in both extract and all grain 5 gallon batches. Here is the all grain version: http://www.northernbrewer.com/off-the-topper-iipa-all-grain-homebrew-kit and here is the extract version: http://www.northernbrewer.com/off-the-topper-iipa-homebrew-kit

When fermenting how cloudy is it supposed to be? I fear I may have done something wrong...
C A on Feb 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello Steve,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! Like most beers during fermentation, the beer will be quite cloudy due to all of the yeast going into suspension while consuming sugars. If you are still concerned about the cloudiness, you can send us a picture to info@northernbrewer.com and we will take a look!
Is a blow off tube recommended for the gallon batch, or will an airlock be ok? for off the topper
A shopper on May 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is a good idea! A strong beer like this has a lot for the yeast to work on, and so you can have a very-active fermentation. It would be wise to install a blow-off, or at least be ready to install one if it does start to go a bit wild! One can be made from a 3-piece airlock and a piece of 3/8" tubing by removing the cap and internal part from the airlock, and stick the hose onto that center "stem". then install the airlock normally, and drop the hose down into a container of water or sanitizing solution. This is basically creating a large airlock, and it will catch any foam that does come up and out.
If I have a schedule that makes me leave to go out of town just before fermentation finishes and the beer would sit in the jug for another three weeks will it spoil or go bad if it's in the jug for 5 weeks. Wondering if I need to wait to brew till after my trip
M A on Oct 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'm brewing a 1 gallon batch which is in fermenter now. I plan on leaving in the primary for 2 weeks and then bottle or transfer to secondary for 1 week. If it were me, I'd wait until you get back from your trip...but that's just one man's opinion!
Does this kit include a hop bag?
A shopper on Nov 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,
It comes with a straining bag for the grains. Hope that helps! Cheers!
Under "additional information" you state that it takes 6 weeks to make. I read the recipe and i only come up with 4 weeks. What am I missing?
Matthew J on Mar 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: With these higher ABV double IPA (like Plinian Legacy as well) kits with a lot of priming sugar I've found better results letting fermentation going an additional week, so 3 total versus the instructed 2. Obviously many factors can affect this time but I found the final product cleaned up better given the extra time; compared to a previous batch I only fermented for 2 weeks. Additionally I've seen that bottles with an extra week to condition seem to also taste a bit better than the bottles I opened previously.
How cloudy was the beer during fermentation?
C A on Feb 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Beers will often look VERY cloudy during the fermentation, it's from all the yeast in the mixture that remains in suspension. At a certain point, the vast majority of it will fall to the bottom of the fermenter, and it will look much clearer. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
When steeping the barley malt at the beginning the directions say to steep the malt while the water is heating up. Is there any desired temperature range that it'd be best to steep for 10 minutes? I would think this would be important...maybe not?
J O on Jan 27, 2016

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! When I steep my grains, I will put them in right when I start heating my water, and let them steep until I hit 160 degrees. The most important thing would be to not let the grains reach over 170 degrees. This will result in astringent tannic flavors being extracted from the husk of the grain. I hope that this is helpful!
Is it any way to know what is the weight and content of steeping grains?
Denis B on Dec 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No weight or contents on bag of steeping grains. The bag was 4" x 6" and approximately little over half full by 1/2" thick. The only information on the label was "Small Batch Grains" with numbers "1G23M" above a bar code followed by #239206.
Is each hop packet used for one step? They are labeled in ounces, but the recipe gives the weight in grams. This is very confusing.

What should the final gravity be on this kit?
James D on Mar 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It depends on how fermentation goes, but an FG in the range of 1.008 - 1.018 would be appropriate.
What is the OG and FG supposed to be? I don't see it listed anywhere.
