Clean, crisp flavor characteristics with low fruitiness and mild ester production. A very versatile yeast for styles that desire dominant malt and hop character. This proven performer from California has become a very popular "house" strain. May yield citrus notes with cooler 60-66°F fermentations. Use for pale ales, IPA's, cream ales, or other american styles.

We strongly recommend ordering dry yeast in the summer months. We do include complimentary Cold Ice Packs with all liquid yeasts. However, it is difficult to guarantee that the ice packs will survive the trip, given transit times and particularly hot temperatures.

Great yeast
I used this yeast for the Bitter Demagogue kit. Made 1500mL starter because the yeast was 3 months old. I was able to generate a ton of yeast. This yeast kept chugging for two weeks. OG: 1.089 to a FG: 1.010. I harvested this yeast and plan on using again soon.

Great Performing yeast for IPAs
I decided to try out the Omega West Coast 1 with the ever popular Dead Ringer IPA kit (all-grain, 3-gallons). I wouldn't have even considered this brand but NB was out of Wyeast 1056 so I needed a convenient replacement and there was the Omega!

I did NOT use a starter, and the Yeast was probably 2 months or more old at the time of use. OG was a bit concentrated at 1.072 with a low volume yield (less than 2.5 gal) after mash and boil (I didn't calculate my water volumes properly).

It fermented at the concentrated level all the way down to 1.012 sitting at about 68*F and I let the primary go 24 days before kegging. I topped up with water to fully fill my 2.5 gal keg and after 2 weeks of a very slow force carb and conditioning period, the end result was a pretty amazing, clean tasting IPA.

I have recently brewed with the Omega Kolsch strain (still in primary) and would trust trying their other strains in the future.

Fantastic yeast!
I used the Omega West Coast Ale 1 yeast for a Pliny the Elder clone. I pitched one pack to a 5-gallon batch, OG=1.068, and within 5 days it has fermented to a current gravity of 1.015. I will let it go for a few more days, and I would imagine it will finish nicely around 1.012.

Based on NB Customer Service
So I received this yeast to brew the Ace of Spades kit a few months ago. When I got the yeast I placed it in my fridge since I couldn't brew for a few weeks. Unfortunately we had a massive windstorm come through and knock out my power for several days and I was unable to keep the yeast from getting warm. I ended up have to dump the yeast and called Northern Brewer to see if they would by chance replace the yeast. Without question they shipped me a new batch and I received it in just a couple days! Great job Northern Brewer for the help. I'll update in a few days after brewing to see how the yeast actually works out

Purchased this yeast for a beer that was probably too big for it to handle 1.055 OG and decided against making a starter. After 2 weeks of primary I had to repitch yeast to get down to my FG.

If I were to use Omega in the future i would make a starter regardless, but this says it performs well on wort under 1.060 and that wasn't the case for me.

Live?
I am disappointed in this yeast product. I have almost always used a smack-pack yeast which lets me know that the product is alive and ready to pitch. With Omega, I have no idea if I'm pitching live yeast. The yeast is in very little liquid and suspends poorly.
I can't waste the cost of brewing supplies and my time on such an unknown.
I will not buy this again.

what is the cell count with this strain in this packaging size?
A shopper on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Copy and pasted from the Omega web site... "Through our proprietary process, we generate the optimal number of yeast cells, which varies from strain from strain, to yield the best and most consistent performance for each particular strain. Thus, for most of the strains in our collection, our home brew pitches contain at least 150 billion viable yeast cells at packaging. In some instances, certain strains may contain up to 500 billion cells per pack while in some instances, other strains may contain slightly less than 150 billion cells per pack. Most importantly, all packs contain a sufficient number of viable yeast cells to ferment 5 gallons of wort up to 1.060 OG at the time of packaging."
What is the shelf life of this yeast?
A shopper on Feb 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The recommended shelf life is 6 months. Northern ships out liquid yeast with at least half its shelf life left, though usually fresher, so best to plan to use all liquid yeast within about 3 months of ordering. If it starts to get older, the manufacturer does recommend making a yeast starter to build it back up and to be sure you have enough yeast. Cheers!
