Product Details
All of you out there currently enjoying that chocolate Bourbon barrel Brettanomyces continuously wet-hopped Imperial black IPA, take a moment and say a silent “thank you” to the humble West Coast American Pale Ale. Sure, it might seem tame to your 21st century craft beer sensibilities and sensory-overloaded palate, but back when Northern Brewer was four dudes and a 20-foot storefront, this style was the “extreme” beer – and it's still going strong. More than any other, this widely-imitated ale is responsible for bringing craft beer into the national consciousness and re-introducing America to real beer. Now it's a classic. Decidedly clean, firmly hoppy, and drinkably bitter, this isn't an ale that feels the need to jump up and down and scream for your attention. From Chico, California to all points of the compass, whether you're pairing it with Mexican, burgers and fries, or just conversation, there's always a good time and a place for a good, basic pale ale.

Great everyday beer
I brewed this beer about a month after receiving the kit. An easy to brew, straight forward, all grain kit. The primary fermentation was vigorous using US-05 yeast. It made a nice everyday beer with a malty backbone.

Great Sierra Clone
I started home brewing in 2007 and have always used the local store. Around one year ago I moved to a place where the nearest local store is not easily accessible. Thus, I decided to try northern brewer. Since the first beer I brewed in 2007 was a Sierra Nevada clone I decided to give the Sierra Madre a shot. It turned out fantastic. Very smooth beer, great taste, and a fantastic Sierra Nevada clone. The beer was so good that I have purchased three other Northern Brewer Kits. Happy Brewing!

Happy is the One Who Brews Thus
Fully recommend the beer to those of us that are not hopheads but occasionally love a variant that accentuates the hops over the malt. Excellent citrus flavor and easy to put together. Well balanced taste of the hops with the aroma. Awesomeness embodied. Now, where did I put that orange garnish?

Not our Favorite IPA Recipe
IPA is our very favorite beer. Normally, we run 2 of our 3 taps with an IPA. So far, we have brewed several IPA from recipes on this site. Our very favorite is Jamil's Evil Twin, followed closely by the excellent RyePA recipe we found on Northern Brewer. Both of these recipes come out perfect every time. This Sierra Madre recipe, on the other hand, we have attempted 3 times now, based on our hopes that it would imitate Sierra Nevada. It could possibly be a problem on my end, but it has disappointed every time. For whatever reason, we have consistently excellent results with other recipes, and this one always comes out a little off.

Northern Brewer A good place to get supplies
Fresh ingredients, good information on recipe and history of the beer. Prompt arrival of shipping. Great consultation with brewer if needed.

This is one of NB's best beers! Seriously, this is one of two of my best beers, and favorite. Extend the beta sac rest or a little Candi sugar will dry it out a bit if its too sweet, but man you can't buy beer this good!

Good, straight forward pale, not amazing
It tastes a lot like what it's trying to imitate, in fact too much. It doesn't have that "brewed at home" kick that sets homebrew apart from regular store bought beer. As advertised, this beer is good and really drinkable but I won't brew it again, there are too many other beers with more character.

Shelf life of these kits?
A shopper on Aug 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've kept kits in storage from 48°F to 70°F for up to to and three months without any noted degradation. I keep all ingredients in the original sealing, especially hops. Hops when exposed to air degrade quickly even if put in the freezer.
