Add to the flask when propagating yeast on a stir plate. Can be boiled in the flask along with starter wort. Always a good idea to have spares on hand in case you pour the stir bar into the fermenter along with the starter! 50 mm size is best for 2000 or 5000 ml flasks.

not best design - too simple
This came with my Maelstrom Stir Plate. When I first tested it, seemed to work ok in 2L flask with water - nice vortex & good startup. Once I started to use in viscous starters, all sorts of issues: bounce around, not startup without moving the flask around etc.
I found a much better stir bar, designed with a pivot ring in the center. This starts up with ease, and also spins more quietly. Also important to get right size. 45mm works well for 1L/2L flasks, and a 70mm stir bar works great for the 5L flask.

spin baby spin
spins up as advertised. Prefect for my 2L flask.

Great for large flasks but....
I have only used it twice so far and it's worked but because of its size it gets thrown off the magnet a lot. I'm sure there is a trick to it but it's mildly annoying having to reset the magnet bunch of times while stirring a yeast starter

great stir bar
used the one that came with my maelstrom stir plate and found that I needed a bigger one. this is perfect for my 1 gallon starter.

Doesn't work
I lost my round 25mm stir bar so I went to the LHB shop to replace it. I've been having the same problems everyone else has been having with this item, so I'll be ordering the round 25mm ones with my next batch.

Thrown every time. weak magnets?
I've had no luck w/ this on a homemade stir plate.I tried having my rare earth magnets from weakest to ridiculously strong (opposite polarity on each end to mate w/ stir bar's polarities), right below the surface of Ehrlenmeyer flask, and FLING to the side it goes every time I start it.

Works Great
I'm real cheap I guess so I built my own stir plate and used this stir bar. I can easily put a vortex straight to the bottom of a 1200 ml of water in a starter due to it being more viscous it makes it to the bottom just not a violent.

Waste
Even on the slowest speed in a 2L flask it throws. Would stay on for a revolution. Put my small stir bar in it that has the centering ring, and no issues. I may try the larger yellow with the centering ring. Dont buy this.

Great Stir Bar
I bought a few of these. My friend and I both love them.Quiet and I have no problem with it throwing on my home made stir plate. Drop it in, put it on the plate and turn up the speed it naturally centers and creates a beautiful vortex. Not sure why others have had issues.Works great for me and my mentor brewer.

Not a fan
Maybe its because I dont have a NB stir plate but this puppy will not spin more than two revolutions before throwing. I think its flat sides may cause this. Not NB's fault just a poor designed item.

will this work on a 5 gallon carboy?

BEST ANSWER: NB web page describes: Add to the flask when propagating yeast on a stir plate. Can be boiled in the flask along with starter wort. Always a good idea to have spares on hand in case you pour the stir bar into the fermenter along with the starter! 50 mm size is best for 2000 or 5000 ml flasks.

It is the right stir bar for use in flat-bottom Erlenmeyer flasks in this size range. Might also go in smaller 1-liter flask.

This stirrer is large enough to work well with the commonly marketed "Maelstrom" for yeast propagations.

Use in a Carboy? - contour of bottom not flat - this may lead to unstable spinning, crashing against side walls. Unlikely a heavy glass carboy might break against thrown sidebar, but . . .
