Product details

A shaggy companion, this is a man-best-friend of a porter. A coat of beautiful deep mahogany is filled with gruff notes of chocolate, caramel and distinctly British Maris Otter base malt. Its persistently fluffy head lolls into a smooth, creamy body. Tame enough for a few rounds of fetch, this laid-back sipper is surprisingly complex for such a low-gravity beer. It's not the bee knees, it's not even the cat's meow, it's better than that. It's the Mutt's Nuts.

Aroma

Bready, toasty malt aroma with a hint of roastiness. Low hop aroma and medium-low esters. No diacetyl.

Appearance

Deep brown color with ruby and mahogany highlights, brilliant clarity. Firm tan head with fair stability and retention.

Flavor

Bready malt base with hints of caramel, chocolate, and low roastiness. Moderate fruity esters. Predominantly malt forward with restrained bitterness and low hop flavor. Fairly dry. No diacetyl. Smooth aftertaste of chocolate and faint roast.

Mouthfeel

Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Slight creaminess. No alcohol warmth or astringency.

Overall Impression

Easy drinking dark English ale, complex flavors for such a low gravity beer.

Not Ready to Review, but can't wait for the results

I will be trying to make a Cherry Porter, using Mutt's Nuts Brown Porter, and some cherries that were soaked in Brandy (Cherry Bounce) for last winter. The Cherry Bounce is long gone, but the soaked cherries are in the freezer. When I transfer to secondary, I will add a few pounds of the cherries. I'll to a tertiary fermentation to settle out any more debris.
I will keg three gallons and bottle two gallons. I just hope that when I add the priming sugar for the bottling, that the residual alcohol from the brandy won't kill of the yeast needed for carbonating.

Good Kit!

I did the all grain Kit BIB with the dry yeast. The kit turned out well. A very drinkable Porter! Will buy again.

Mutt's Nuts

Just making this today, but it smells great. Always satisfied with my Northern Brewer recipes.

Low ABV Porter

Order crushed all-grain kit. Ingredients received quickly and were, as usual, high quality. BIAB yielded an O.G. of 1.047 with 5.25 gal into the fermenter. 4 weeks in primary, and F.G. was 1.018. 61% apparent attenuation with S-04. I primed with honey 1 week ago. Still needs a little time to condition, but a nice malty, light mouthfeel, chocolate and roasty porter. Will likely buy again.

Best Beer I have Brewed So Far!

I got into brewing a few years ago and started with extract brewing, as you might expect. This beer, in all grain, blew all my other beers out of the water! It is not a super heavy beer with an excellent nutty and malty profile. I would brew this again for sure!
