A shopper on Dec 24, 2016 BEST ANSWER: The wires and the plastic tops last a very long time. The redish rubber seal needs to be replaced as they age. I have used mine for a couple of times and they are still fine. With time they will harden and crack, time to replace. I wash them when I drink the beer and then pull back the red seal to prevent any kind of growth that might contaminate beer. I dont remove them just pull them away for better drying. We would suggest a 38MM cap for the gallon jugs. Bottles that use these swing-tops are specifically made to use them; they have thick glass at the neck, and have 2 "dimples" for the wires to grab onto when installing the tops.
