But I love hefeweizens. The package came chilled and the yeast pack was fresh and healthy. Started fermenting straight from the pack in 1.062 OG wort within ~8 hours. My hefes seem to turn out more like Franziskaner than Weihenstephaner, but that's probably my temperature control. Was this review helpful? Even the starter went bananas (no pun). The whole fermentation chamber smelled like sweet banana bread. The end result was more of a clove/spice flavor. Will definitely use again with some pitch adjustments for desired esters. Was this review helpful? This last time I made a starter, allot more sulfur than previous times, temps at 71*F no banana or any other esters detected, very faint in past 3 batches. I moved the fermenter to a cooler environment which has cleared the sulfur + bottle conditioning eliminates any residual. SO:1) rechecking sanitation process (but was sulfuric when I opened the smack pack the 1st time I used it.2) Recheck water chemistry (never had any problems before with ANY yeasts).DO NOT OVER PITCH THIS YEAST!I'll see what the end result is and decide if I should keep this culture or order another. Was this review helpful? During primary fermentation I smelled banana, but I got no esters (no banana or clove) at all in the final product. The Wyeast website states that "over pitching can result in a near complete loss of banana character." The beer is drinkable and delicious, but with none of the esters that I was hoping for.Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0) Flag as Inappropriate October 31, 2013Brandon Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0) Flag as Inappropriate Always a reliable strainI mainly brew 5 gallon extract kits but I hope to make the transition to all grain. I purchased the 8 gallon Megapot 1.2 because I could use it for both extract and all grain brewing. I have brewed a couple of 5 gallon kits using the Megapot to do a full boil. It does that task perfectly. It is well built and I feel confident lifting it after the boil. The handles feel solid and the silicon grips protect my hands. On my last brew, the weather did not allow me to brew outside so I used the Megapot on my gas cooktop. It is large enough that I can use two burners - not quite as fast as my propane burner but I was able to get 6 gallons to the boil in short order. I am looking forward to trying BIAB next. Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (3) Flag as Inappropriate October 28, 2013James Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (3) Flag as Inappropriate October 2, 2013BroStefen Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (3) Flag as Inappropriate Really heats the place upI use it for my all-grain batches. Plenty of room for wort and fits better on my ceramic electric (hate it!) range. I had been using a wider aluminum pot which went over the edge of the range. This way I lose less heat and it gives me a good concentrated boil. A 5 gal. batch comes just to the top of my wort chiller which maximizes the effectiveness of the chiller. So, more efficient to heat and cool. Excellent construction -- heavy! I'm a bit of a geezer so having my son available to tote a heavy pot of hot wort helps. Some folks have complained that the logo is stamped on not lasered. Since I don't keep it on my mantlepiece for public view that aesthethic problem is not an issue! If you are doing all-grain I can recommend this pot.Was this review helpful? The inside level markings are marvelous when adding water. I use 5 gallon RO water, but then I am or was never sure how much additional water to add to obtain 6 gallons. The inside marking makes this super easy. ( I prefer 6 gallons to start, due to boil off) After transferring the wort, I can easily clean the inside by simply using my hand to rub accumulated debris off the inside. Drying is easy as I use a bottle tower, and simply put the brew kettle on it upside down. The handles make it easy to move, and are well insulated. ( no ouch that is hot comment) The handles are also handy for me to tie off my bags with my hops in them during boil time. Great product. Was this review helpful?
