Worked great! Made brewing life a lot easier.
Filled my 10 gal (11.7 total gal) mash tun with the recommended amount of hot (175°) water for my grain bill and dropped in my grains. The water hit a perfect 158° and stayed there for over 30 minutes. After stirring many, many times and keeping a temperature probe submerged in my mash (the lid is perfect for popping it into place and still having just enough room to let a wired probe dangle down inside) and it finally got down to 154° at the end of an hour. Wow, only a 4 degree drop over an hour's worth of opening the top and stirring.... Not once did the mashing or lautering phase develop any problems. The thing worked like a champ and drained easily (too fast, really! I'll have to learn how to keep it sloooowwww) and cleaned up in a snap. The second tun held my other reserve of 175° sparge water for over an hour (with lid sealed) and temperature only dropped 1 degree. My only negative against it is the instructions (unless I somehow missed them, or misread them) weren't very clear on how to assemble the valve conversion assembly and mount in the spigot hole. It took several minutes of trying different combinations to get the valve spigot to stay in place. Worked great after that though! And there should be a big warning painted on the side: "Close valves before brewing!!" Learned the hard way what 175° water felt like, running down the inside of my shoe and on my foot!! ;-)Would buy again! Well-built and very solid construction, very durable. Should last many, many brewing sessions.
Mash tun
Very nicely designed for easy use but use a larger diameter filtering plate.

Buy the 10 Gallon
This product came with everything I need to do a Batch sparge and works very well. I bought the 7 gallon for my 5-gallon beer setup in a batch sparge configuration. It works, however, I would buy the 10 gallon cooler next time. If you ever want to do party Gyles or really big beers, or even double batches the 10 gallon will serve you better.

Mash tun
It works good. Holds heat well

Holds Temperature
I've used this mash tun many times and it will hold temperature to within one or two degrees over 90 minutes even when used outdoors in very cool weather. It's light weight is a benefit when I have to dump heavy wet grain.

Just one problem...
In general, I love the cooler. I bought the whole kit, so I got the false-bottom and the valve too. I had been using a rectangular Coleman Stacker 48 can cooler, with a custom BIAB mesh bag, but I wanted to stack my MLT on top of the HLT (kinda like a Blichmann BrewEasy. In a way, my whole system was designed around using the stacking coolers as a true RIMS system. The RIMS recirculated the water in the lower cooler, until the strike temperature, then the output was diverted to the upper cooler (MLT), and I step mashed... I couldn't boil in the system, so I went to a Bayou classic 15 gallon with a Blichmann Boilcoil, made a spacer, and mounted the Fermenter's Favorite Cooler (MLT) on the upper deck. The problem occurred when I mounted the Blichmann AutoSparge valve. The wall of the cooler is WAAY thinner than the Coleman cooler. When I moved my sparge valve to the new cooler, it sags dreadfully from the weight of the device. I tried backing it up with a fender washer, but it still lacks support. When the MLT is full, it is a bit better, because the mash water supports the valve ball. The next thing I will try is bonding a piece of 60 thousandths Kydex to the inside surface. Not exactly sure how I will do it (probably JB Weld or silicone bathtub caulk)...

Response from Northern Brewer
Thanks for the review! Sounds like a nice set up. Did you refill the insulation when you installed the auto sparge

That could help prevent sagging

not sure

let us know if we can help in any way!

It was a nice investment.
When I decided to make some equipment upgrades, a new mashtun was on my list. I have built cooler mashtuns before and could have done that again but this time I decided to get something better designed and built to be ready to go. I'm very happy with it. I bought the 7 gal setup for my 6 gal batches. It has held temps very well and the false bottom design eliminates the problems I have had before of grains getting under the false bottom and clogging the output. I do recommend rice hulls in every batch they save a lot of headaches.

I am using the 10G all grain brew kit from NB. I'm having issues during the sparge. The mash tun hose barb is too small. The wort barely trickles out even with the ball valve open full. I have tried this with just water in the mash tun with no grains and it still just trickles out. I'm using the materials that came with the kit. It seems like the inside or outside barb hose fitting needs to be bigger to create a better flow. Suggestions?

BEST ANSWER: Hello Dean,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! Is the tubing running from the false bottom to the inside hose barb fit snuggly on each hose barb? Also have you tried back flushing the mash tun to ensure that there is nothing blocking the flow? The 3/8" hose barbs are plenty large enough to get a good flow of wort, so I am thinking there is something else going on here. Can you by chance send in a a picture of how things are hooked up? That way we can better troubleshoot the issue at hand here. Let me know and we will get it figured out!
Are the lids screw on?
A shopper on Jan 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, takes about two turns from start to finish
If I only brew 5 gallon batches, would the 7 gallon cooler suffice?
D F on Feb 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The 7 gallon coolers can handle a nice high gravity mash so is what we recommend for most 5 gallon batch size all grain brews. Anything over like 1070 - 1090 should probably be 'partial mash' and make up the difference with DME/LME, just more practical, and the 10 gallon coolers would ahave extra head space and a little more temp loss during the mash rests - so I would go 7 gallon. I hope this helps!
Does the mash tun have a screw on lid?
A shopper on Jan 24, 2017

Does the 10 gal. Tun have an airlock port?
H O on Jun 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, there are no airlock holes in the top of the Mash Tun coolers. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
How long can this mash tun hold a steady mash temperature for?
J A on Jun 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It will easily be able to hold your mash temperatures for the full hour and more; customers report, and we have found, that it works great and holds temp very well. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
I was wondering if it would be possible to add a thermometer. Possibly before the ball valve?
J R on Apr 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Perhaps, but it would not be easy, and might cause all sorts of problems as you'd need to drill through the insulated side of the cooler. You'd almost certainly have to use some sort of silicone to seal the hole. One way to add a thermometer to a tun is through the lid; it's safer to drill there and it won't be a leak-point. A person could use a long-probe digital thermometer, if it would reach down to the grain, or have a wired probe in the tun via a hole in the lid. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Can anyone tell me how tall this is without the lid? Trying to configure a 3 tier rack and want to figure out how high this will sit.
R O on Mar 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Fermenter's Favorites Cooler Mash/Lauter Tun is 18-5/8" high w/ lid on and 17-7/8" w/ lid off.
