Why did I not buy one of these years ago?!
No seriously, why?! The green base is sturdy, holds the test jar with no wobbling, yet is easy to remove. The entire thing is dishwasher safe and makes my brewing life that much easier!

It works fine
This is a simple test jar. The glass is thin, but not flimsy. The green base easily detaches, though that's helpful for cleaning and storage. There is no scale on the jar, nor is there a spout top. The product works fine. The company packages it well, so you shouldn't need to worry about breakage during shipping.

Does not work with NB's Lab Grade Hydrometers
Tube is exactly what it is advertised as - it just does not work with the lab grade hydrometers despite being advertised as compatible. It's too narrow and the lab grade hydrometers bind on the side, resulting in the hydrometer always reading low (I have verified the hydrometers are accurate otherwise).

Response from Northern Brewer
Greetings!

Thank you for the review! The glass test jar should indeed fit the lab grade hydrometers. Would you be willing to send me some pictures? I'd love to see what is causing the binding so I can help fix it for you.

Cheers!

Jules

A little delicate
Before I started brewing I was told these cylinders do tend to break, so I bought an extra foam ring to put around the neck in case it fell over (a trick I learned in high school chemistry). No problems there, it did everything it was supposed to do; but the second time I used it, I underestimated the volume of fluid I would need to make my hydrometer float, and when I slid it into the jar it smacked into the bottom. The hydrometer was fine so I thought I was being paranoid about the popping noise I heard. Somehow, though, the cracks I didn't then notice in the bottom of the jar held together until I went to check the final gravity and half a cup of beer ran all over my counter and onto the floor. Not a huge loss, I now use a plastic jar. Maybe I'm being unfair and the fault is my carelessness, but hopefully this review will help you judge for yourself.

Very unstable
Bought it to replace my old plastic one, but wasn't a good choice... The plastic base doesn't fit the glass tube good enough which makes it unstable. The tube even pops out of the base sometimes when lifting it. I will have to make a new base before it breaks...

Hi David, I'm sorry that one isn't working for you. Sounds like there is something defective with the base. We could certainly send you a replacement if you'd like.

Thin glass
Really thin breakable glass. The bottom broke out when sliding the hydrometer into the jar.

Dan M on Dec 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The inner diameter is almost exactly 1 3/16". It might be a bit of a tight fit.

Cheers,

Gabe from NB
Will this work with the lab grade hydrometers? The basic plastic test jar that comes with the brewing kits and basic hydrometer binds the slightly larger lab grade hydrometers so they always read low...
