1000 ml borosilicate glass flask is an excellent all-around yeast starter vessel. Takes a #8.5 stopper or 35-45 mm foam stopper - for optimum fit, especially when propagating yeast, we highly recommend using a foam stopper.

I read these reviews as I was ordering a 2000 ml flask today, and was surprised by the reports of breakage. To be fair I ordered my 1000 ml a few years ago and it is a German made one. I have to say this thing has made 30-40 starters at least, and most on an ELECTRIC stove, right on the element, from boil to cold water in seconds and not so much as a crack. Risky, yes, nonetheless I have had excellent luck, not to mention it getting bumped and tossed into a box with the other equipment. Can's speak for everyone else, I just know mine has endured more than it was supposed to. My only gripe is the size and its use being limited to small beers, which is why I am ordering a larger one. I hope I have the same luck. (Posted on 2/14/12)Rating - Good flask for my purposes Review by JP

I've made quite a few starters with this and had no problems, other than trying to get DMI through the neck of a boiling flask... (not recommended) and boilovers (also not cool, but my fault.) I've cooked it over flame (usually a camp stove outside) and dumped it in an ice bath with no problems. (Posted on 2/11/12)Rating - Used and Wrong Size Review by NYCBrewer

They sent me an obviously used erlenmeyer flask that required more like a #8.5 size stopper. Very disappointed Northern Brewer! (Posted on 10/30/11)Rating - broke on second use Review by Doug

The glass on these is very thin. I am careful not to go from flame to icewater, but this one broke while I was dipping it in sanitizing solution when I bumped something else.Rating
I have a very old 500ml flask that is not a useful size but is much thicker glass. They don't make 'em like they used to. These are not crazy expensive so I'm not too bummed. Just be careful....fragile! (Posted on 10/25/11) - Excellent with stir plate, otherwise you should grab a 2000ml flask Review by Andrew

Excellent flask when used with a stir plate, otherwise you should grab a 2000ml flask. As "Matt" suggested, I also found out through various yeast starter calculators that a 1000 ml flask wasn't large enough for the calculator-suggested necessary volume. Don't forget, the liquid yeast adds volume, too! (Posted on 3/31/11)Rating - Works as advertised. Review by Dane

It's a Erlenmeyer flask and it arrived in one piece. I got exactly what I ordered and I'm happy.Rating
The United brand flask I received is about 8 1/2" tall and the 1000ml mark is about 4 1/2" up from the bottom. A very normal if not generous head space for a 1000ml flask. But, because of a flask's shape there is not much volume up top so boiling foam or krausen can rise high. (Posted on 12/16/10) - Pay less, get less. Review by Matt

I was excited to make my first yeast starter all of the way up until I filled my flask up to the 1000 ml mark and realized that there was not much head space. Other Erlenmeyer flasks that I have used have had several inches of head space to allow for a full flask that can be safely boiled without much risk of extreme boilover. I ended up decanting about 200 ml of my wort to give myself enough room. This economy model will accurately hold 1000 ml but I would suggest getting a 2000 ml flask if you really want to safely make a full sized starter. (Posted on 5/31/10)Rating
