Our favorite sanitizer! Star San is an acid-based no-rinse sanitizer that is effective and easy to use.
  • Made from food-grade phosphoric acid, safe for people and the environment.
  • Star San is self-foaming, which helps it to penetrate cracks and crevices.
  • Odorless and flavorless, no need to worry about tainting your beer or wine.
  • Does not require rinsing when used at the recommended dilution.
  • Use only 1 oz Star San per 5 gallons of water and just 1 to 2 minutes of contact time.
  • Used as a soaking solution, it can also be applied by hand (wear gloves) or with a spray bottle.
  • Reusable: a solution of Star San will remain effective for up to three to four weeks in a sealed container; it is effective as long as the pH is 3 or lower.
  • It is safe for use on all surfaces, but use caution since it is an acid; contact with soft metals, rubber, and plastic should be kept to a minimum. Star San is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and will not harm septic systems.

One note of caution; we often pull some into a smaller cup for little items like the scissors, and bottle caps. We had one of those measure cups with a little ramp inside that you see the measure by looking down from above. Star San ate the measures off the ramp. I consider that a defect in the cup, not the Star San, but still the lesson is: choose your container's carefully, this stuff is potent. (Posted on 5/10/13)

We have been using Star San since we started brewing and have never had a problem with contamination. The foam did freak us out for a while, but like others, have discovered that its not a problem for the beer.
If you have sensitive skin you may want to wear rubber gloves if you're going to be exposed to it for long periods of time as it will bother your hands after awhile. (Posted on 3/25/13)

Best sanitizer for homebrew Review by Otis

At proper dilution, safe but with awesome kill rate. Won't stain like iodophor, more effective than bleach. Foam is weird at first, but harmless. Breaks down into harmless organics when container filled with wort/beer.

When diluted with distilled water will last weeks in a spray bottle. Very useful for quick sanitization. Buy the bigger size, you'll use it a lot.

Note, this is a sanitizer and not a cleaner (use PBW or similar for latter). Mildly acidic, avoid getting on natural stone. (Posted on 10/13/12)

This is my first brewing experience and I bought a starter kit from Northern Brewer that came with some Star San, and I have to say that it cut down significantly on my prep time. The book I bought has bleach as their recommended sanitizer and it requires a 20 minute minimum time frame and rinsing is required, but with Star San it only took two minutes and there was no rinsing which was a God send, as this was my first time and I was constantly forgetting to sanitize things until the last mintue. Thank you Star San. (Posted on 7/24/12)

i've been using starsan for about 2 years now, and i'll never go back. recently a friend of mine gave me an old glass carboy that had definitely seen better days. it was crusted with years of calcified residue that he couldn't remove, so he was going to throw it away but i traded him a beer for it. i'm not gonna lie, it was gross. used oxy cleanser, long soaks, and even vinegar to get rid of the buildup, to no avail. i was seriously considering CLR, but i decided to try undiluted starsan first. i attached a green scrubby to a bent coathanger so i could clean the inside and i found out that applying the undiluted starsan to the crud was like magic. it was gone with a few swipes of the scrubby and the carboy sparkles like new. my friend didn't believe that it was the same carboy! I must admit I feared the foam, and rinsed a few things despite instructions which say not to. Had even considered switching products, which is why I read these posts. Now I fear not the foam, and will carry on my merry way with Star San. It's simple and awesome goodness, with a convenient built-in measuring cup to boot. (Posted on 1/24/12)
Doesnt kill wild yeast or mold Review by sol

This works great and you can keep it use after use. But be warned to throw it out when it becomes cloudy. I had to pour out 2 infected batches that I used old cloudy starsan as my sanitizer. Yes I checked PH. Beer was cloudy and sour like a wild yeast. Did some research and found out it doesnt kill yeast or mold. I still recommend it, just be warned that you should check PH and dump it when it gets cloudy contrary to what some people claim. (Posted on 1/6/12)

I have been an avid iodophor user for years because I was too cheap to buy anything more expensive. I finally broke down and purchased some Star San after getting tired of all my tubing and plastic buckets getting stained. I'm happy to say, Star San is an excellent product. Very short contact time needed and no rinse is a great bonus. Really cuts some extra time off my day when I forget to sanitize things ahead of time. Also nice to have some in a spray bottle to give a little shot to when I'm not sure whether or not it has been contaminated. (Posted on 11/27/11)
Don't forget to use a cleaner also, very important. Review by Marc

Star San is excellant, but a cleaner first for carboys, kegs and all brewing equipt. is important.
Five Star has complete information avail. on their site, containers have complete instructions also.
I ended up using a metric measure to measure out
6 ml for one gallon of water, much more accurate way to measure small amounts.

I had a wort or growth on a finger that did not like the Star San, rubber gloves worked. Finally needed to have growth removed and now no problems. (Posted on 10/20/11)
Keeps the nasties away Review by BasementBrewmistress

New to brewing, but am already in love with this stuff. The foam can look intimidating, but doesn't at all affect the flavor of your brew. Have made a few bonehead mistakes on sanitizing, but Star San had my back. Have moderate painless flaking on both hands, but it's nothing gloves or medicated lotion can't fix. (Posted on 9/15/11)

Works great, one warning Review by Chris
    Rating
Works great as a sanitizer, and a little bit goes a long way.

One warning with this stuff- be mindful that you are using an acid, albeit a mild one. After using it for the first time while bottling, I didn't clean up all the little water spots around the counters in my kitchen, and found the next day that the finish had been etched off of the counter tops a bit. I'd suggest avoiding this if you don't want an unhappy wife. (Posted on 3/18/11)
You must not fear the foam. MUST NOT!! Review by Jon

I bought some of this, took it home, made a 5 gal batch and was PISSED! I was all like, "Foam? WTF mate? It's gunna get all over the place and make my beer taste like soap or some junk! Like, OMG!!"

But guess what? The foam is now my friend. We are besties for eva. We might run away to Vagas and get married. The foam WILL NOT EFFECT YOUR BEER. It actually creates an extra airlock when your filling your carboys, and guess what? Less air means more sanitaion my friends, my brothers, my sisters! YYYEEESSSAAAHHHH!!!

Also, I hear you can reuse a bactch as long as the PH maintains a certain level? I haven't tried this yet but will get on it asap and report back. Well... ya know... maybe. (Posted on 2/16/11)
Works on bleach haze Review by Big J
    Rating
I used to use bleach to sanitize my carboys (12 years ago). This left a haze on my carboy that I could not get off. Started brewing again and started to use the new cleaners/sanitizers. I used B-Brite, Brushes even the new carboy brush that you put on a drill and nothing got rid of the haze. Frustrated I decided to brew and use the carboy regardless of the haze. Put Star San in to sanitize and to my amazement after about 10 minutes all the haze was gone. Will use this for all of my batches. Don't fear the foam! (Posted on 1/29/11)

This stuff is great. I'll never use another product again. Oh, ya and ignore the foam. The foam is what makes this stuff so great really. It gives you a barrier between open air and your beer while transferring to secondary. No rush to get your bubbler back on either. Great product, buy it. (Posted on 12/20/10)
