flavorful summer ale Review by jack
Rating
I went through the NB recipes looking for a nice summer ale. Why not go Belgium summer ale? This saison is tasty. Malty up front, followed by the honey and herbal flavors, citrus, yeast. Very flavorful. A nice alchohol hit, too. I usually want to brew the beer I've never had. This ale, I've never had. Only compliments from my craft beer buddies. (Although they're drinking free beer!). Even some yellow fizzy beer drinkers found this ale tasty/interesting. NB made me look like a brewing pro, on this one. Thanks! When you brew this, time is your friend. Don't rush it. Let it mellow. Now waiting on my NB Imperial Stout I brewed for the winter/fall holidays! (Posted on 7/19/14)

This is not a beer that I would like to have all the time, but as a change of pace, something different, I would recommend it. It does have a noticeable citris flavor. I will probably make this beer again this summer. Northern Brewer's description of the beer is pretty accurate. (Posted on 4/15/14)

I wish I knew more about evaluating and describing beer taste so I could do this one justice, but you'll just have to take my word on it that it's great. Ended up quite a bit darker for me than the sample picture, but I'm told that's usually the case with extract and to me does not negatively affect the taste in the slightest. If you're considering this kit, go for it. This was my first saison and I can definitely see myself brewing another one in the future. (Posted on 11/3/13)
Great Summer Beer Review by Thad

I made this one a few months ago. Gave it the 15 min. Hot Stand at the end and then chilled it off. Had some floaters in the primary but no big deal. Left in the primary 2 weeks, 2 weeks secondary, and tried one after one week in the bottles. No carb at all. Another 2 weeks later, this beer had a nice off white head with residual effervescence from the bottom of the glass.
Definitely give it the extra time, it's worth it.
This beer has a great nose to it. The lemon grass really adds some nice esters and spice notes to it, and you really taste the orange peel. I may add some honey to it next time just for an extra flavor note. Definitely a great summer beer. Hide some for later, this one will disappear fast. (Posted on 8/29/13)
Great kit for beginners to make a great beer Review by Alex

Super easy to make, tastes great. What else could you ask for in a kit?? This beer is everything you wish Shock Top and Blue Moon was. Crisper taste than both and better overall balance. You won't regret making this beer. (Posted on 8/28/13)
Certainly Extraordinary Review by Don

Am brewing my second batch now. First one was a big hit with all who tried it. The Lemongrass and Orange peel really add a nice freshness to the taste, and seem to cool you off on a hot summer's eve. The Petite Saison has been a longtime household favorite, and this may have replaced it.

Dealing with the extra "floaters" during transfer to secondary, then to the bottling bucket, and then to the bottle caused a bit extra effort. However, even when some of the lemongrass and orange peel made it into a bottle it stayed at the bottom and was not an issue. I ran the wort through a two screen filter, but still left some residue.

I chose to do the optional 15 minute wait after the boil and before the chiller.

(BTW-this was the first time I used a NB wort chiller instead of an ice bath, and it is totally worth doing if you are on the fence as I was)

This one is a winner! (Posted on 8/22/13)

You really can't go wrong with a Northern Brewer Kit. Kegging this weekend, but from a racking "sample," all is good.
This is the kind of beer you sit back after doing some work in the yard. Also should have a very good pairing with Asian food.
I used the Danstar Belle Saison dry yeast. (Posted on 8/21/13)

Great Summer Beer Review by Eric

I kept this in primary for 8 days, and secondary for a week, using Wyeast Belgian Wheat. The beer fermented out really dry, which created a really crisp - almost too crisp - beer at first. About a month later, the beer has started to round out and get a lot better. Really happy with this beer! (Posted on 7/16/13)

Used dry yeast, re hydrated, followed receipt to the tee, 2 weeks in primary, 2 weeks in secondary. 2 weeks in bottle and I was not impressed, 3 weeks in bottle and it is now pretty good....starting to get the different flavored. I expect it will continue to get better. Looking forward to this aging some more (Posted on 7/13/13)

Fragrant, Spicy, Refreshing, Easy to Brew Review by george

The NB marketing e-mail bit me and I ordered this kit the day I saw it. Was a tad bit apprehensive as I love the customer reviews and feedback from the tried and tested...plus positive tweaks to recipes...but none here as this guy was a new creation. Figured I'd add my 2 cents.

Brewed 05/16/13 (Extract Kit)
OG - 1.048
Added at flameout:
-5lbs Wheat LME
-1lb honey
Wanted to preserve the light color and possibly some aromatics from the honey so made the bulk of fermentables late additions.

Also did a 10 minute hot stand at the end of boil to pull as much out of the flavor additions as possible.

Made a 2L yeast starter with Wyeast 3942 Belgian Wheat

Otherwise followed the directions to the letter.

Yeast was pitched and allowed to ferment for 15 days at 68F. Racked to secondary for 10 days at 64F. Final gravity was 1.010

Kegged and carbed 40F@17psi (3 something volumes of CO2).

Impressions:

Look: Nice golden color. Yeasty haze. Solid white foamy head...and lots of it (but that could be due to my kegging)

Smell: Spicy and Citrus/Light Fruits AHOY! Lotta nose here. Not too much hops, maybe a little Saaz. Lemongrass really comes through.

Taste: Good spice, peppery, tart and dry. Some citrus. Refreshing. Not much bittering, which is terrific and totally works.

Feel: Light, finishes tart.

Overall: I like it. Good summer session beer. Could drink a bunch. It was exactly what I expected from this kit and have to say so far in my limited brewing this has been the best smelling unfermented wort I've ever had the pleasure of making.

Funky yeast esters , a fruity backbone, and a velvety smooth finish. Review by Wil

I got the extract + specialty grains version of this kit. It was a cinch to brew, and I even got some instructions from support to do it as a full boil. The lemongrass and sweet orange peel are lovely when it goes into the kettle, but after some conditioning I don't notice the delicate aromas I was hoping for. Next time, I'll use more than the recipe calls for.

I went straight from 3 weeks in the fermentor into the keg, so there's a bit of haze that probably wouldn't follow it through a secondary, but I don't mind some haziness in beers with wheat malt.

And speaking of wheat malt: the body of this beer is amazing. It's velvety smooth due to the wheat malt, and pours up a really nice thick creamy head with great aromas in it.

I used the dry yeast, and it went nuts. I got almost 83% ADT for an FG of 1.010and ABV of 5.7ish%. I couldn't get it as hot as I wanted (rarely over 74°) but I bet if you could kick this up to 80° it would really shine.

If you like saisons, with their funky yeast esters and fruity backbones, you're going to love this. I'll be making this every Spring and Summer for sure.

Great, Did I say great? Awesome flavor. I would say get an additional muslin bag for the lemongrass and orange peel I lost almost a gallon so they should include an extra in the kit.. Its sold out that says enough :) (Posted on 5/20/13)
