Details

We've gone to the drawing board to focus on the important dimensions that help deliver a more consistent and high-quality product. This is no plastic water jug, it's a carboy with details where they count.

The plastic is thick and durable, to ensure rigidity and safety during all kinds of brewing operations. Free of plasticizers, BPA, DEHP, and any other extraneous compounds, this fermentor is purpose-built for your finest brews. Hydrophobic, which means it is easy to clean without the use of brushes - it also retains no oder, flavor or color from batch to batch, so it will last a long time.

Just bought four of these trying to transition from glass to plastic.

My thought is that I will keep one 6.5 gallon around for large primary <1.070 fermentations for head space and keep around a handful of my old 5 gallon glass carboys for long aging secondaries. I have read that the plastic may be permeable to oxygen so I thought either a month in the primary with plastic would be fine and I could either keg, or transfer to a glass secondary after that.

I have an awful imagination and the thought of dropping 5 gallons of sticky wort and having it shatter all over my basement was something that scared me to move over to plastic.

Perfect timing too, if you can hold off, NB has 2 for 1 deals on these periodically. (Posted on 2/18/14)

Finally got so sick of lugging around massively heavy glass carboys that I gave their plastic counterparts a spin. So much easier, to clean, sanitize, carry etc. My only concern is longevity, as even with a good clean post-conditioning, the smell of beer was pretty inside, but I'll hold judgement on that for now.

Word of warning though -- these carboys need a larger bung. The ones I had for my glass ones did not fit. Conveniently, Northern Brewer sells the right size bungs. (Posted on 12/9/13)

This plastic fermentor/carboy is ideal. The 6-gallon size allows enough headspace on a 5-gallon batch that I've never had to use a blow-off tube, and it's also a great container for secondary fermentation. (Posted on 12/3/13)

From GLASS to PLASTIC Review by Harv
Rating
I started off only using GLASS carboys many years ago. I have something like 7x 6 Gallon, 6x 5 Gallon and 6x 3 Gallon GLASS carboys. Excessive, yes.

It took a while before I used PLASTIC pails for use as primaries (too many pails now to admit).

Now, I recently put into service two new PLASTIC carboys that I got from Northern Brewer, a 6 Gallon and a 5 Gallon PLASTIC carboy. Very nice. I especially appreciate the light weight of the PLASTIC carboys. The extra weight of a GLASS carboy, when full of liquid goodness, is very noticeable when compared to a full PLASTIC carboy.

I am trying to use PLASTIC carboys & pails for short term storage and long term storage in GLASS carboys.

I make beer, wine, cider & mead and am happy with the equipment I use - both GLASS & PLASTIC. Cheers! (Posted on 11/14/13)

Great for Secondary Fermentation Review by CW
Rating
I have two glass carboys which work great; however, the Bubbler is an excellent option for secondary fermentation. It worked perfectly for two very different batches - no scratches after cleaning and no hint of residual flavor from the batches. The bonus is that it is cheaper and lighter to carry. One caveat, the bung and air lock that I ordered needed a bit of modification. There was no hole in the bung, but the rubber was extremely thin and was easy to poke a hole. The airlock came with a cap without little air holes. (Posted on 11/11/13)

I've got two of these and have been very happy. They're thicker than the Better Bottle and I think will be less prone to cracking. I have used the better bottle carboys for a few years now. I decided to pick up a few Bubbler carboys and have been blown away by the higher quality look and feel over the better bottles. Does The Job Without The Weight of Glass Review by Randy
Rating
What's nice about this carboy is that it is light, though the plastic is not as clear as the Better Bottle plastic carboy (only reason I am giving it 4 stars out of 5).

It has a larger opening than a glass carboy so it's easier to dry hop using a hop bag. If you have a water filled airlock in place, remember to remove it before picking up the carboy. If you do not do this, the plastic will flex and suck i the water from the airlock. Unlike glass you should not clean with a brush gut use an oxygenated cleaner instead. Cleaning is a snap. Carboys are better than brew buckets because you have a very small opening to seal. I have found brew buckets eventually lose their seal over time and use. Plus, you can watch fermentation in a carboy, not so much in a bucket! (Posted on 10/19/13)

I picked up two of these to compliment my 2 glass carboys. I love the fact that I don't have to treat these carboys as if I am handling a small child.

A little PBW and they are clean as a whistle. (Posted on 10/17/13)

Love the lightweight nature of these carboys. Well made. With a house full of little tykes, getting rid of the glass carboys seems like a prudent decision. I am a little bummed that the mouth of the carboy is a different size than all my glass ones, which means I need to get new bungs (something I was aware of, but is a pain in the neck regardless). The wider mouth has its advantages, I must admit, just wish there was some standardization. Still, hydrophobic coating makes for easy cleaning. Would recommend these. (Posted on 10/17/13)

Excellent Value Review by Chris

These plastic carboys do offer good value for the money; they are lighter and less fragile than a glass carboy. You must keep in mind that brewing bucket rules apply - if the inside gets scratched while cleaning, the bacteria you can't get out render the bubbler bad to ferment in. But I highly recommend the bubbler as a valuable piece of homebrewing gear. (Posted on 10/17/13)

For years I used glass carboys to ferment beer. While I liked the clear glass, they were extremely heavy and slippery when wet. I always feared that one day I would finally drop one, lose a full batch of wort, ruin the carpet or, worse yet, have to take a trip to the emergency room. I finally decided that I needed to replace my glass for plastic and ordered a 6 gallon bubbler. It is so much lighter than glass and is easier to handle! No more worrying about a disaster. I ended up buying 2 more I was so impressed. By the way, breaking the old glass carboys in a dumpster was a blast. (Posted on 10/16/13)

I needed a 6 gallon bottle for wine seconding and was deferring purchase until NB offered up a nice deal. Well, 2 for 1 doesn't get any better so I pounced. The bottles are solid, light, and much safer than glass, all of which I sent to recycle. They make great seconds for wine or primary beer fermenting, but these will be used exclusively for wine as I have 5 gallon plastic for beer, both bottle and bucket. Great deal to summarize! Light. Don't shatter. You won't end up in ER from a gash. Review by Norman
Rating
I'm a firm believer in carboys such as the Bubbler.

It is lightweight (important after a long brew session) and won't shatter if it slips out of your hands or pour hot wort into it when it's cold.

The surface is hydrophobic (hates water) so cleanup is pretty darn easy. Toss is in some Powdered Brewery Wash (PBW) and rinse.

As for scratches, I've not found that to be a worry. Still, if you are worried about scratches, buy a new one every year. That's far better than a trip to the ER for stitches. (Posted on 10/16/13)
Very pleased with the lightweight carboy and service. Review by Deb

Because no bung came with the "Bubbler" we had to make sure to get it and an airlock. We rank this a four-star because this wasn't made clear that a bung or cork had to be purchased. But, after we were able to obtain the correct cork size needed for the 6-gallon "Bubbler" carboy, we went right to work making wine. The lightweight carboy was so much easier to handle for this process. We are anxious to get the second carboy going we purchased. We are also pleased with the quick reponses of Northern Brewer to our orders. (Posted on 10/16/13)
They Call It the Bubbler Review by Dustin
Rating
Previously I had only worked with the plastic bucket fermenters and was happy enough with those, except that one can't see what occurs inside. In general, the carboys are nice because you can see the active fermentation process working inside, and you can definitely hear the pressure changes and bubbling with the air-lock, which doesn't usually occur with the plastic buckets. The plastic carboys are much easier to transport than the glass ones. The carboys are the way to go. (Posted on 10/16/13)
Glass lover turned to Plastic Review by Travis
Rating
I've always been a fearful devoted glass carboy homebrewer, but after 10 years of brewing (and 2 smashed Glass carboys later - thankfully they were empty!!) i am now a lover of these Bubblers. i have used them several times and they are very light, easy to clean - no brushes, just cover the end with your hand, use warm water and B-brite and shake the jug like a poloroid picture and about 30-60 seconds later the scum line is gone! the other nice thing is they have a huge mouth ID so the liquid drains very quickly when cleaning/rinsing.
i have only 2 glass carboys left and they will see only seldom use - perhaps for long lagering sessions or something. (Posted on 10/16/13)
great product with a common flaw Review by vka2b
Rating
Perhaps it's just me, but one thing I fail to understand with a lot of such products that I buy is why aren't there volume markers on the side of the bottle? It seems like this would be extremely easy to add, and it ends up being a pain for when you have to top up a batch to a certain volume. Of course, it wasn't hard for me to just add this myself, but that's the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise, I love it. It's a great alternative to my plastic buckets in which I couldn't see the beauty of what was going on inside, and it is a great lightweight alternative to glass. I always choose glass over plastic, but in this case, the weight tips me in the other direction. (Posted on 10/16/13)

This is the perfect size if you really want to make a true 5gallon batch, I learned that as I went and loss some beer through foaming on the first fermentation. Performs as promised.

:: Plenty of head space for 5 gallons of wort inoculated with a 'foamy' yeast.
