It has a fine balance of malt, hoppy bitterness, and warming alcohol, with a fresh hop aroma of floral citrus, and pine. Bittered with pure essence of hop, flavored with massive kettle additions, and featuring not one, but two dry hoppings, it is the first and last word when it comes to the ultimate hoppy homebrew. There is no need to stash this Imperial IPA away as it is intended to be enjoyed fresh, before the delicate hop aromas fade. Get ready to experience the ultimate lupulin threshold shift!

This was my first brew and I got it with the NB 1 gallon beer making kit. I'm pretty shocked with the results! It's as good and the best IIPAs I've tasted. I drink Pliny the Elder on a regular basis and while I don't think this tastes like Pliny, I do think it's just as good. In fact, I had a Pliny after my first bottle of home brew and I actually preferred the home brew. My brew came out a little toasty, a little sweet, nicely hopped and balanced. I'm very happy with the results. Personally, I found it more like Lagunitas Sucks than Pliny the Elder, but I've never tasted anything exactly like it. I already want to make another batch!

Very hoppy with this beer
You must like hops and lots of them. This beer tasted good out of the fermenter at bottling, now going to have to wait for bottles to carb up.

Ok so where do I start. This my first small batch kit from Northern brewer and actually the first kit from Northern Brewer I actually have gotten to taste. (There are a few in the works just waiting for me to drink). So i guess ill start with the brewing process everything went great followed the awesome instructions given in the kit and any question I had no matter how much I made have seem like a noob the guys at norther brewer answered quick and very friendly. BLOWOFF TUBE NECESSARY for like the first 3 days hops and foam were exploding from the gallon fermentor so i'm happy I started with one. Bottled at 1 week and 5 days and conditioned bottles at 70 degrees F for about a week and 5 days.(I have a 70 degree storage room at work). Carbed up real good! I tested the Original brix on a refractometer at work and it was 23.55 final brix 11.9 so abv was 10.23%, and it showed, strange cause the 5 gallon version should have 7.5% abv. This beer is clean and crisp but has a hop forest inside of it which I love and which helped cover the alcohol really well. There was a good hop bitterness along with a great piney earthy notes upfront and a slight citrus aftertaste. I will make this again the 1 gallon and hopefully it 5 gallon version. i know that was alot so im done now ok bye!

Oooohhh man... the hops... the HOPS!!!
I am not a huge IPA fan, but I wanted to go through the process of making one to see how it tasted along it's life. I will say that this is a pretty tasty brew.
It is smells and initially tastes very citrusy... almost like a semi sweet grapefruit. It then turns to quite the bitterfest as the hops kick in. I like it much more than I though I would. A friend of mine who is a huge IPA snob and who did not have a whole lot of belief that I could produce a drinkable IPA was quite surprised and impressed with the beer.

Very Hoppy!
This was my second brew and I was really worried about how it might turn out. I'm not a big fan of IPA's but got this in the starter kit.

This was pretty resistant to brewing errors and has turned out very well. Lots of different flavors in the beer. If you love IPA's, then, can't recommend this enough!

What exactly are the weights and types of the steeping grains? I am getting ready to brew this and am trying to learn how the different types of grain effect the final product.

I am ordering this as a gift. How long will it be good for? Do I have to worry about it expiring?

BEST ANSWER: This kit will be shipped with crushed grain; the grain is good for 3-5 months with no problem. After that long, the crushed grain may begin to get a little stale. It can still be used, but it's better if brewed up while fresh. All the other components would be good for much longer than that.
Do 1 gallon kits com with yeast??
B A on Dec 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes they do. One pack of dry yeast. Use 1/2 of the pack for the one gal. Brew
The site indicates this is takes 6 weeks to make. The paper instruction advises to bottle after 2 weeks and bottle condition for 2 weeks making it a 4 week?
J O on Feb 24, 2016

It should say 4 weeks; it looks like we have a typo! Thanks for pointing it out.

Just got the kit! Very excited to brew. Does this beer (1 Gallon extract kit) have an aggressive fermentation? Will I need a blowoff tube? I see the recipe adds priming sugar at burnout. Just want to be prepared!
G K on Jan 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I skipped the priming sugar at that step and it still came out really nice. Even without the extra sugar it had a pretty healthy fermentation for 3 or 4 days. I used a 5 gallon fermentor for this 1 gallon batch and had no issues.
Are the hop amounts in the instructions correct? Should it be in grams or ounces? It states grams. Seems high for a 1 G kit.
G K on Jan 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is grams. This is a double IPA, and most certainly has an abundance of hops. Tomorrow is bottling day so I am unable to give you any details on taste, but it had an incredible hop aroma on cook day. Hope this helps
Is there a list of what this kit includes somewhere? I can't seem to find one...

BEST ANSWER: You can view the ingredient list here:

I'd like to sub out the extract for grain. Can you offer what the replacement grain malt would be?
