Details

Alt refers to an old-school, top-fermented style of brewing ale rather than a relatively modern bottom-fermented lager. Altbier is especially associated with the city of Düsseldorf. Alts are a bit difficult to explain to the uninitiated - kind of like a hoppy Oktoberfest? A very malty pale ale? You’ll just have to try a glass of coppery-brown, rich, caramelly, and bitter ale to get the idea.

Too long to age Review by Andreas
Rating
Brewed this back in September mainly because my dad loves alt's. I was a little let down by this beer at first. Kegged the beer after 6 weeks, and upon tasting it was rather disappointed compared to when I tasted it during the transfer. The bitterness was rather sharp for the style. Considering I'm big on IPAs this shouldn't have been an issue, but it surprised me. Luckily I also bottled 10 beers to save for later. Tasted them between November-January and I was pleasantly surprised by the last month. This beer had become 100x better. Unfortunately that is a long time for a beer that should be great by 8 weeks. I would give the last bottle a 5, but because I was let down by the time it took for this beer to really peak, I can only give it a 3 for those previous months. (Posted on 2/11/14)
excellent beer Review by Edward

Made this to have something different than an octoberfest. This beer is very good. Followed directions to the letter. Kegged it and did not tap it for a month. It was perfect when first tapped. It is better after another month in the keg. Like the decription it is like a hoppy octoberfest. Nice after taste of hops but not bitter. (Posted on 2/11/14)

Best Kit I've Ever Brewed Review by Tim

Followed the recipe pretty closely but I kept in the primary for about 6 weeks. It has turned out great. Nice noble hop nose and great malty taste. Also easily the best color and clarity I've gotten to date. (Posted on 1/5/14)
Excellent alt Review by Marc

Second batch of alt I have brewed. This one got a taste test by my father who grew up drinking alt in Duesseldorf. Not quite the same as Uerige alt, but he still liked it enough to keep going back to the keg - for me that's a ringing endorsement and I will be brewing this again. Also got rave reviews from the Amis at a recent party. (Posted on 11/30/13)
Nice and Balanced Review by DB

Recently put this one in bottles for holiday gifts. So far so good, can't wait for it to sit a little longer. I'm sure it will be a hit. Balanced malt and hop flavor. I just ordered the Super Alt recipe kit cuz I want something a little heavier and maltier to keg. (Posted on 11/19/13)
Great German Session Beer! Review by Cidafa
Rating
This is a great German Style Session beer. It has great flavor, not too heavy, easy drinking. Will not last long in my fridge. Not a real high ABV, which is nice once in a while. I will do this one again sometime. I recommend this to anyone.

It was a very easy kit, great for beginners, which I am still consider myself. I also used the WLP036 liquid Yeast, I was impressed with the liquid yeast as compared to the dry as far as taste goes. But, beware to the beginners it does take a bit longer to see fermentation bubbles in your airlock as compared to the dry yeast. Enjoy!!

Fall at its best Review by Kirt

Love this beer. I skipped secondary fermentation and did three weeks primary at around 71 degrees rather than the recommended 68 or so. Turned out great. Brewing again but this time with secondary to see the difference. Unique, clean and rare beer. Easily a favorite ! (Posted on 8/6/13)
Fantastic Review by Kyle

I'm generally prefer more yeast/malt/grain flavors in my beer rather than heavy hop bitterness, so I find a lot to like in German beers in general. This Alt just came out perfect. I'm not sure if it was the malt or specialty grain, but it ended up with this awesome biscuity/grain taste at the end that was perfect, with just enough hops to add a balancing bitterness. I bottle conditioned about 10 days, and then put in the fridge. While it was good after a week in the fridge, after a month in the fridge it was superb! Next time I would be a little more patient and bottle condition it longer. If anyone has ever been to the Cape Ann Brewing Company in Gloucester, MA, this tastes very much like their "Navigator" beer (even though that's a German bock). (Posted on 7/26/13)

So hard to describe, but this is a great beer! Make sure to ferment cool and steady and this will turn out well. I used the wyeast in a starter at 62 and this turned out great. (Posted on 6/10/13)

Killer! Review by Brian

I got this because I wanted something for Oktoberfest that didn't require lagering, and this was spot on and fantastic. It was a hit beer amongst friends and has earned a spot in the rotation. It does get better with age, so if you can make it last (not easy!), or bottle some, do so. (Posted on 1/11/13)

Great Beer - Easy to Brew !! Review by John

Brewed the Alt pretty much per Recipe. Best beer I brewed to date. Was a big Schmaltz (?) guy and this was not exactly that - but perhaps better. Brewed at 68F two weeks primary - two weeks secondary - then kegged with "The Force" @ 20PSI then down to 10PSI. Poured great and will brew again. Nice !! (Posted on 11/13/12)
Even Better Than I'd Hoped Review by Rob
Rating
For an extract brew kit, this is an insanely good beer. I wondered if the moderate alpha hops would be not really enough, but they are aided by the mild Munich malt, and give loads of flavor without being overpowering. It was ready after 10 days primary, 2 weeks carboy, 2 weeks in the bottle. I will definitely be brewing this one again, soon!

Can't Screw it Up... Review by J.CREEK BREWER
Rating
I tried my best to screw this one up: boiled over the brew pot, added too much water while topping off the fermenter, forgot to remove air lock while dumping trub twice (used conical), dumped too much usable beer during trub dumps (1st time using said conical) & it still turned out great. Needs more than 2 weeks in the bottles though. I recommend at least 3 weeks for bottle conditioning. Smooths out really nicely at 4 weeks. Will brew again... and correct mistakes. (Posted on 2/7/12)
Smooth, Clean, Full Bodied and slightly bitter finish! Review by MAD
Rating
I have an affinity with the German beer mentality: Brew the best easy drinking beers possible, and that is what this beer is.
Brewed this about 4 times now and it is excellent everytime. I typically cut the amount of hops used in half and add them at 30min into the boil. Yields about a 30IBU beer and its just right for me! Try it out, you won't be dissapointed. (Posted on 1/17/12)
My first perfect beer Review by Chip

Not a single complaint on this one. It's also the first time I've tasted this style of beer. My friends enjoyed it as well with the exception of one who only drinks American lagers.

This style is quite unique. I used US05 at 60F room temperature for fermentation. (Posted on 12/16/11)
Prost! Review by Chad

I tried this one after one week in the bottle and was a little disappointed. However, after two weeks in the bottle, it's the tastiest beer I've made yet. A little more bitter than I had anticipated, but I've never had an Alt before, plus I'm a hop-head so it's all good. A great malty finish that allowed me to detect the various grains used. It's good cold and it's still great as it gets warm. I primed with Coopers tabs and found it to be a great carbonation level. I fermented around 58 for 2 weeks. (Posted on 11/21/11)

This is my second attempt at home brew and I must say it turned out great! This beer is well balanced with a bitter start followed by a malty sweetness that is very drinkable. I am using this beer as a rendition of an Oktoberfest for the fall season. I will be making this one again! (Posted on 9/27/11)
good solid recipe Review by Melody
Rating
Looks like a good solid recipe for a German Alt. I wanted to try to up the gravity and turn this into a Sticke Alt. I wanted to boost the OG up so I added an extra Lb of CaraMunich 1 to the steeping grains and 23.3 extra lbs. of LME ( Breiss Munich). Hey why not?! that's what makes home brewing fun for me, experiment baby!
Ended up at 1.068. We'll see how this tastes after completion.

This beer really grows on you in a hurry. It's bitter finish really balances it's initial sweet taste. Full of flavor and mouthfeel and if you were to taste a commercial brew after having one of these babies its quite a comedown. This is exactly why I love homebrewing because you cant find a taste like this brew anywhere I know of. It was good to drink after 2 weeks primary, 5 days secondary and 10 days in the bottle. Well I'm from the Duesseldorf area in Germany which means that I am very critical when it comes to Alt beers. This one absolutely exceeded my expectations and compares to my local hometown favorite Alt beers in all aspects. I think key is to have it ferment and age at lower temperatures around 55-60F (Posted on 12/30/10)

I brewed this one at the beginning of August and then let it sit for a month and a half before cracking open my first bottle for my annual Oktoberfest Party, and was it a hit! This is by far the best extract kit I have brewed from Northern Brewer and I will definetly do this one again. The longer you let it mature the better it gets! (Posted on 10/8/10)
