Product Details

Our Deluxe kit uses a pair of Big Mouth Bubbler® plastic fermentors as vessels in a two-stage fermentation process. The additional equipment and extra steps taken with the Deluxe Starter Kit reward the brewer with clearer, clean-tasting beer as well as the ability to brew a wider range of styles as your confidence grows and sudsy repertoire expands!

Designed with a game-changing wide mouth that you can easily fit your arm through, the Big Mouth Bubbler® Plastic Fermentor saves time and effort on cleaning, so you can brew your next batch sooner without so much as blinking an eye at a dirty fermentor. Graduation marks ensure you’ll brew your first kit and every kit after that with the accurate volumes to ensure a perfect batch every time, and the punted bottom makes transferring wort easier for a crystal-clear finished brew.

The included single-port lid features a standard port size to accommodate all the tools in the starter kit for ultimate ease of measuring and monitoring the progress of each batch. The modular lid design of the Big Mouth Bubbler® Plastic Fermentor is easy to clean and easy to upgrade to a dual-port lid once you want to start experimenting more. Dry-hopping is a breeze once you begin to explore more advanced brews such as IPAs. The optional Dual Port Lid allows for the use of a temperature controller probe such as the ThermoStar Dual-Mode Digital Temperature Controller with optional 12" stainless probe ;ensuring precise and repeatable fermentation temperatures!

The Big Mouth Bubbler® design has a smaller footprint than standard fermentors to take up less space while you test your hand at homebrewing beer.

HERE’S THE FUN PART! Every starter kit comes complete with your choice of recipe kits. Just pick one of the three classic Northern Brewer recipes below and you’ll have all the ingredients you need to take your new gear out for a test drive.

Caribou Slobber Brown Ale Like your brews tall, dark and drinkable? Then try Caribou Slobber Brown Ale. Perfect for fans of sub- stantial craft beer, this ale is full-bodied and smooth, deliciously dark without a hint of bitterness. Guaranteed to become your new favorite session beer.

Irish Red Ale If you’re looking for a perfectly-balanced, crowdpleasing pint, you can’t go wrong with our Irish Red Ale. There’s a reason this kit is our best-seller. Actually, three reasons: great, medium-bodied taste, rich coppery color and enticingly low aging requirements.

Chinook IPA This American IPA recipe kit has a relatively modest gravity and an immodest hop character derived entirely from a single hop variety: Chinook.

Required but not included: a 4 to 5 gallon kettle and roughly 50 empty 12oz beer bottles that accept pry-off caps. See our Raise Your Game Fresh Start Upgrade Kit.

Note: Testing the specific gravity of your batch with a hydrometer is the best way to keep tabs on fermentation, and for us to help troubleshoot by phone or email. We highly recommend adding our Mad Brewer Upgrade Kit or Brewery Essentials Gravity Testing Kit.

Great Easy Homebrewing Kit
I recently decided to take up a new hobby and there is none better then brewing good quality homemade beer. I have my first batch in secondary right now and I just brewed a second batch that is fermenting in primary. It is very easy and fun to do. I have not bottled yet and I am sure that it will be time consuming but I do place to upgrade once I get the hang of things to a keg system so carbonating will be a breeze. Northern Brewer Company is extremely helpful when it comes to a timely response for help with their product. I had multiple questions while making my first batch to make sure I am doing it correctly so I do not waste 5 gallons of beer. They provided detailed help and support and overall there is no other rating for this product and this company other than 5 stars. I have 2 other friends that helped me in the process of my first batch and we are all hooked. They will also be buying the same kit to start their own homebrews. Cheers/Prost

Big mouth bubbler lid
Very happy with the purchase minus one little design flaw in the big mouth bubbler lid, it doesn't stay on during the first few days of fermentation because the lid isn't a screw on lid

Deluxe Starter Kit?
I'm not so sure "deluxe" is the right word to describe this kit. The bottle filler is absolute junk and leaked to the point that after about the first few bottles I had to keep a bottle in hand to quickly swap out because it leaks incredibly bad. The capper leaves a lot to be desired and I was looking forward to enjoying this part of the brew. With this capper I see why people go to kegs. The Big Mouth Bubblers are great in that they have the large openings for cleaning etc, however, they are somewhat difficult to get the lid to seal tightly. Sort of confused how this kit is "deluxe," I mean it doesn't even have a clip for the racking cane.

All great except...
I love the stuff! The big mouth bubblers are fantastic. I have some other equipment I have acquired and have been consolidating down to exactly what I need. I brewed my first batch with the equipment (Chinook IPA). All went well and I have a great tasting beer. One issue I ran into is the bottling capper doesn't seems to clamp the caps down all the way. I was very luck to have another old one on hand that worked. The caps didn't seem to work either (with either capper). I am also disappointed to read that the screw-on lids for the bubbler is discontinued. I have read the posts and agree that for high gravity beers that universal lid is going to blow right off. when it is pulled out of star san and placed right on the bubbler it fights to stay on. I have to dry the gasket off (which exposes it to contaminates) in order to get it to seal properly. Its fine for secondary, but I am very thankful I have at least 1 screw on lid. Other than that I love it. oh...the racking cane hose could be a foot longer. 6ft would be ideal...it gives beginner brewers some flexibility if they don't have pre built gravity tiers designed for home brewing. I have the counter and the floor. 4-5 ft is not enough hose. cheers!

A few small problems
I just bottled my first batch of Caribou Slobber Brown Ale so I can safely say I have used all the components. The big mouth bubblers were soooo much easier to clean and pour into. When it comes to pouring your wort into the bubbler I discovered it works best to put it on the floor then place the large funnel (purchased separately and highly recommend) in the opening. Place the large strainer (also purchased separately) on top of the funnel. Now you here is where I figured out a little brew hack. If you have lower opening cabinets open one and rest the handle of the strainer on the top of the cabinet door for pouring. This will save you lots of frustration as it stabilizes the strainer for pouring. Now my summary says a few small problems.... I just described the first one, the lack of extra equipment that IMO should be included for additional cost obviously but should at least be offered with the kit. The second problem is the beer bottling dispenser thing. Yea that thing is a piece of junk! I hooked it up to the buckets spout with all proper tubing and as soon as I got done filling the first beer bottle, the flow would not stop coming out! I immediately shut off the flow to avoid making a mess, tried to fix the problem and resumed flow only this time to have beer continually spewing out without even touching the bottom of a bottle. I disconnected the whole assemble and just used the spout to fill my bottles. Not only was that simpler, it was far more effective and didn't require me to be on the ground trying to fill bottles. Just save yourself the time and throw that thing away and use the spout to fill your bottles. Other than that this is a great system. I'm very happy with it and highly recommend it!

Ok
The kit was a good starter kit, but the lids on the big mouth bubblers would not stay on. I wish that they would have been a screw on lid. It would have been much better

Junk
Didn't bother reading reviews or would have never purchased. Lid will not stay attached and continues to gently slide up and off anytime it is placed back on. So now I'm out the money on fermenters and a beer kit. I would not recommend this product, stick with the glass kit as I wish I'd had. Northern shouldn't even be selling this after doing further research online. This is my first beer kit and it makes me want to quit brewing.
Do yourself a favor and read reviews off site and you can thank me later.

Good but...
The kit gives you almost everything you need to start your first five gallon batch of brew. However, it is missing a no rinse sanitizer (only includes one step, which is a great cleaner). It is also missing the option of glass big mouth bubblers, adding bottles, and enough caps. Had the kit included this, it would be much much better.

Bubbler tops won't stay put
My main complaint is the tops of the bubblers will not stay on. I had to tape the tops down with packing tape. Now I have adhesive on the outside of the bubblers after removing the tape. Customer service did offer to let me return the bubblers for credit but by the time I pay for packing and shipping it would be almost be a wash. I think the screw on tops should be standard.

How does the lid secure to the carboy? Is there any concern of it not being airtight?
B R on Nov 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The lid relies on two overhanging edges and a tight secure screwed on lid to seal. In our tests the seal should be sufficient to give an air tight seal. It helps to get the lid all foamy with star san before putting it on. We sell a universal lid with an easy to clean gasket as well. It is not included here since a plastic BMB should not need any better of a seal.
Want to start brewing my own beer. I'm a Coors light drinker, is there anything similar?
R U on Feb 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi RT,

We do have a few its that will be lighter, but the tricky thing about Coor's Light is that it's a lager beer, rather than an ale. Lagers are more difficult to brew because they require somewhat precise refrigeration controls. Almost all our kits are ale kits for this reason. Lagers are a pretty advanced thing. Super light lagers are even more difficult though, and it's really, really difficult to get it that clear and light. This style is arguably the most difficult style to brew, believe it or not!

But cream ales are sometimes considered to be the "ale version" of the light lager.

http://www.northernbrewer.com/cream-ale-extract-kit

Basically, a cream ale is an american light lager, but with ale yeast. It won't be as clean or clear, but it will be pretty light, and just about as close as you can get with ale yeast and ale techniques.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions.

Cheers,

Charles
Hello, I want to start this hobby and want to purchase the big mouth bubbler kit. I just want to know if You've addressed the review issues of the fermenter cap coming off and the bottle filler leaking?
A shopper on Jun 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for contacting Northern Brewer. I understand you have questions about the lid of the Big Mouth Bubbler and the bottle filler for the Deluxe Starter kit. With the lid of the Big Mouth Bubbler, it is held in place with rubber gaskets which hold the lid into place. However with PET plastic, if it is slippery with cleaner and still wet, it can cause some slipping if there is enough force of CO2 from the fermenting beer. So there are a couple things you can do. You can allow the items to dry before using, which the instruction on the cleaner and sanitizer both suggest that before use, or you invert the gasket on the lid of the Big Mouth Bubbler, so the large ring is facing down. It does make it a little harder to get on, but we have found it works well to stay in place. With the bottle filler, the small piece that pushes up to allow beer to fill the bottles is held in place by gravity, sometimes it can go back into place crooked causing a little bit of dripping. We suggest having all bottles ready to be filled, or putting a cookie sheet under the bottling area to help catch any leaking. Cheers! -Deanna, staff
What would you recommend more this big mouth kit or the normal deluxe one?... is the opening of the carbon the only difference in the kits? Thanks
Leonel C on Jun 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It really is a personal preference. You don't have to worry about glass scratching when you are cleaning it but it is also a lot heavier. The glass carboys also don't have the wide opening at the top. They are both really good options for a starter kit. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to give us a call. Cheers!
Does this kit come with a hydrometer? If not do I need one?
J E on Dec 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Well the whole point of having a Hydrometer, is to get your gravity right, and ABV. That being said I didn't need the Hydro meter to make my beer. And in fact I just harvested this beer three weeks ago and it taste delicious. I did all the instructions without a Hydro meter. However, seeing as my first batch of beer that I have ever made in my life came out ridiculously good, I am super bummed that I was not equipped with at least knowing all the information about my beer. I would have liked to known the ABV of this first beer. It would have added to my excitement. That being said, I have since then but a hydrometer of my own. Yes it should be something that your including your kit. A cheap little one wouldn't cost much more. I picked up one at a local brewery store for 30$bucks altogether. And that was the most expensive one. So yes, please put this Hydro meter in the deluxe kit from now on.
Do your big mouth bubblers now come with the new and improved screw type lid?
A shopper on Jun 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't know if it is new and improved but I got mine a little over a year ago and the top screws on to the big mouth bubbler
If you are getting this for a gift for someone who has never brewed before, what else would you include so they have everything they need on Christmas night to start a batch?
E M on Dec 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hello Emily,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! I would most definitely recommend the 5 gallon stainless kettle to do the boil. I would also recommend the Mad Brewer Beer Testing Kit, though this is not necessary, the book that comes with it is very nice to have as a reference, and they hydrometer is a great tool to have to know what is going on during fermentation. I hope that this helps! Have a wonderful day!
With the recipe kit that is included ( I ordered the Irish Ale) is priming sugar included and is the yeast dry or liquid?
Mike H on Dec 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes they are. The Danstar Nottingham dry ale yeast and a 5 oz. pouch of priming sugar is included.
Is there an option to purchase this kit with the siphonless fermentors?
H A on Nov 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There is not an option for that right now. Sorry but thanks for the request!
Does the kit come with sanitizer?
B H on Oct 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This kit does not include sanitizer.
Is it possible to upgrade this kit to Glass Big Mouth Bubbler fermenters?
J E on Oct 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There are two starter options. One has plastic carboys and the other has glass. The difference between the two kits is only $10 so it's really based on your preference which one you get. Happy brewing!
How does this product compare with the http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/deluxe-brewing-starter-kit? That is, for a beginner who is looking for his first kit, and wants a kit to use for quite some time... which would be the better package/deal?
G R on Sep 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Both have their benefits and drawbacks. Plastic can be scratched and stained ruining the fermentors. However these are easy to clean and very light and unbreakable. The wide mouth also makes dry hop additions very easy if you like hoppy beers! The traditional deluxe kits uses glass carboys

which are heavy and breakable. However

they are unscratchable and can last forever if they don't get damaged. I recommend investing in a way to carry the carboys to make it easier

like a brew hauler carrying strap

if you got with the deluxe.
What are the dimensions & weight of the parcel and are all components in the one container?
N I on Sep 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, everything was in the one container. I don?t have the box but it was about 30?tall x 30?long x 15-18?wide and probably 25-30lbs.
Are there material for brew beer(ex: malt, hop and yeast)?
A shopper on Nov 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,
This starter kit comes with a recipe kit that will have everything you need to brew a beer. There are three different kits to choose from. Cheers!
Is there a glass big mouth option
N U on Jan 1, 2016

Sorry, not at this time. I'll pass along the suggestion.

Cheers!

Charles
