Package came slightly inflated due to shipping and customer service suggested that when I was ready to smack the pack, that I turn the package upside down and pull the fold on the bottom of the packet outwards. It really did make finding the nutrient pack easier to find and break. (Posted on 6/8/14)
Great yeast Review by Vineet
Rating
I've ordered 3 packs of this yeast...the only reason I rate it 4 stars intead of 5 is that one of the ones I ordered never expanded after I smacked it. The instructions say it doesn't necessarily need to expand in order to use it, but I don't know why they say that if it's supposed to be a measure of yeast viability. The one I used that didn't expand ended up not fermenting my wort and I had to add a fresh new pack. Other than that, this yeast produces a great beer. (Posted on 1/20/14)

This is a great yeast that I used in almost all of my pale ales and IPAs. I have never had any issues with it. I have used it to ferment a few rather "big" beer with OGs over 1.080 without a starter and have had great luck! (Posted on 1/19/14)

Wyeast 1056 is Great! Northern Brewer shipping is not so great. Review by Jim
Rating
I use Wyeast 1056 American Ale liquid yeast for many of my homebrew recipes bought elsewhere than Northern Brewer and is excellent. It always starts within 6 hours and is tolerant of being pitched into wort at 65 to 85 degrees. For my first Northern Brewer recipe Kit (Dry Dock Pale Ale) ordered with Wyeast 1056, the Wyeast package arrived puffed and (looking to me anyway) like it was activated. I sent a customer service email immediately and called them directly, and the answer I got was that it was likely puffed due to CO2 released during shipping transit, and in any case, I should make and use a Yeast Starter Kit. Whatever. I refrigerated it until I was ready to pitch it 4 days later, and thankfully it worked. I don't know if Northern Brewer customer service was correct about the release CO2, I think they were cavalier to suggest making a Yeast Starter to deflect the issue of their shipment of Wyeast, but whatever. Going forward, I will order their kits with dry yeast and buy my Wyeast liquid yeast packages locally. (Posted on 12/2/13)

Good Yeast, but Package swells in shipping Review by Chris

This is a good yeast. Have not had any problems with this on, but the package swelling that happens during shipping is rather inconvenient. It makes it impossible to "smack" the pack. If it was not for this I would have given it 5 stars. (Posted on 11/24/13)

While I am ambivalent about mail order slap-packs, I think I'll be using them as my primary yeast source. The last two packs I ordered came inflated, which is not a big deal, but I wasn't able to pop the inner bag and so had to go into a yeast starter. Yes, I know I should be doing this anyway, but part of the fun (an expense) of slap packs is the convenience factor. That said, the vast majority of my experiences have been positive and I would recommend. (Posted on 11/12/13)

Not nearly as easy as dry yeast Review by Sam
Rating
Admission: This is my second time brewing. The first time, I used dry yeast and it worked out great. This time, I went with Wyeast and I'm a little bit worried. First of all, I had great difficulty finding the nutrient packet because the bag was already pretty well expanded when I got it (I couldn't feel through the bag in the middle -- I could only feel through at the at edges). When I finally found what I thought to be the packet, I gave it a good smack but even then I wasn't sure if I popped it. The only idication that I popped it was a "liquidy" sound, but since the bag already sounded sloshy, I wasn't sure. The bag expanded *very* well after that, so I thought everything would be okay. But after exactly 5 hours (yes, I waited the full period -- I'm a beginner so I'm not good at laying out my timeline yet), the bag had expanded way too much. I knew it would probably shoot everywhere when I opened it, and it did. I lost at least a third of the contents of the packet in the sink. I should have made a small triangular cut with scissors at the packet's corner, aiming it down into the carboy -- but hindsight is always 20/20. I give this product 3/5 stars because I did not have a good experience, but I know I'm a beginner. Hopefully this batch turns out well. (Posted on 11/11/13)
Makes great ales Review by Raymond

I have used this yeast 3 times now. It was the liquid yeast option on the American Amber Ale, Dead Ringer and Midnight Beatdown Wheaten Porter. I ran into problems with swelling of the package the last time I used it which made it a bit difficult to burst the nutrient pack. After several tries I was able to do it and it worked fine. The three beers I made with this yeast were pretty terrific so I would never hesitate to use it. In the future I will be careful to store it in a cooler for my 90 minute drive home to avoid the inconvenience of package swelling. (Posted on 11/9/13)

Cool packs work! Review by Johnny

This was the first time that I have used liquid yeast. It was still cool when it arrived, surprising since I live in Florida. It was difficult judging whether or not the nutrient packet was broken after beating it off the counter top. When I opened it it was not broken, so I cut it open and pitched it in the yeast then the beer. Within 9 hrs fermentation was very active blowing bubbles through the airlock! Maybe the package should have a clear window on it. (Posted on 11/3/13)

Nutrient bag a pain... Review by Kevin
Rating
I received my Wyeast 1065 American Ale smack pack nicely chilled given the distance traveled, so kudos to NB. However, the smack pack itself was kind of a pain. The bag had swelled slightly, so when I smacked it to release the yeast nutrient pack, it didn't all discharge. I had to pour the yeast into a sterile container and essentially milk the remaining nutrient from the pack and deliver it to the yeast. Overall, not a big problem. And it appears to have been successful in lieu of the troubles. Nonetheless, I'll probably utilize another brand in the future for ease of use. (Posted on 10/21/13)

The smack pack arrived already expanded due to the warm weather during shipping (even with an added ice pack). This was my first use of the Wyeast smack pack and Yeast pack did arrive a little swollen which gave me concern. Could not activate due to pack expansion Review by Russell
Rating
I don't have any complaints about the product myself. So far I haven't had any issue with it. My only real issue was with how the product arrived at my home. The "smack pack" was almost completely expanded by the time it arrived at my home (Denver). When I went to use it I could actually smack it enough to break the activator inside. I don't think this was a big deal though since I was using it to make a yeast starter but had I been pitching directly into my fermentor it could have been a bigger deal.

I don't really blame NB for it though. I think the pack expansion was in part due to altitude changes (I've seen this before with many other products shipped here) and also the hot summer weather.

I will most certainly buy from NB again, but I think I might by my yeast local. (Posted on 7/11/13)
Great but unsmackable Review by Randmo

I've used this many times, with great results but they always come inflated, even with the ice pack (I'm in S.E. Fla.) although lately more so. I also had to open the outer pack first, so I just tossed it and the inner pack into my starter jar and went from there. I'm going to try White Labs WLP001 California Ale next time, it got good reviews for pale ales. I took off a star for the unsmackable smack pack. (Posted on 3/12/13)

Responding to the above comment, I also had a hard time at first getting the nutrient packet to burst. I found that you have to turn the yeast packet up side down and get nutrient bladder in the side where the packaging is thin. Then you can smack and easily bust the packet. (Posted on 10/20/12)

Great Clean Yeast Review by Tom
Rating
Don't be afraid to order this yeast. There are some negative reviews on here but it's probably more because it's human nature to want to complain when you've had a bad experience. I live all the way in Texas and haven't had trouble as long as I order these smack packs with an ice pack. It's only 75 cents and it definitely helps to buffer the yeast from the harsh TX elements.

Anyway, like I said great clean yeast. I used US-05 almost exclusively before this and kept noticing a subtle peach note that should not have been there. It was tolerable until I brewed a cream ale and it really stood out. No worries with this yeast though. Very clean and I almost always get about 79% attenuation when using a temperature control.

What a mess Review by Bob

First time using a smack pack, and it wasn't pleasant. Package arrived partially inflated, and it was difficult to feel where the inner packet was in the pouch. When I gave it a good smack, the outer pouch failed and left yeast all over the kitchen. I have heard that they have been having problems with this strain for this very reason. I hope they can fix it, for it looks like a good system. In the meantime, perhaps White Labs has a replacement for it. (Posted on 1/23/11)
A problem and a solution Review by Frank
Rating
When I received this yeast the the pouch was already inflated and the yeast was already dead. NB quickly sent me a replacement. They also told me that Wyeast had been having a problem with the pouches swelling with this strain. When I received my replacement, the pouch was again partially inflated making it difficult to locate and crush the nutrient pack inside My solution was to sterilize a pin along with the outside of the pouch. I then made a small pinhole near the top of the pouch and gently squeezed out some of the excess gas trapped inside. I then covered the pinhole with a piece of tape. The nutrient pack was now easy to locate and pop All things functioned as advertised from this point on with the result being a really nice pumpkin spiced aie. (Posted on 9/26/10)

Didn't work out Review by James

First time trying this product, and while it's supposed to be foolproof I found it anything but. I watched the YouTube video which demonstrated how to use the pack beforehand, but I couldn't tell if the inner packed had in fact been broken after I smacked it, so I smacked it again, felt it, and then smacked it again. The pouch did expand, but it must have just been due to the rise in temperature from being out of the refrigerator, because when I opened the pouch to pitch, the nutrient pack was unbroken. I had to pitch it the way it was and I'm hoping for the best.

I have another pack in the refrigerator and I'll try again on my next batch, but I really think the pouch/packaging could be constructed so that it is easier to use. (Posted on 5/17/10)
