Product details

When vines get past their fourth decade, they produce fewer grapes, but much more intense fruit, giving rich, dense wine* with great character and ageing potential.

Medium-full bodied with firm acidity, this Old Vine Zin shows a combination of red and black fruits--raspberry, blackberry, fig, plum and raisin, along with an intriguing black pepper spiciness on the rich, rolling finish. An excellent match with dark chocolate (try it!), it's also a great barbecue wine (especially chicken), or with lamb, pulled pork or grilled burgers.

Yields 6 gallons

*This recipe kit uses a RealGrape pack to boost flavor and body. Because the grape skins are not dried, they take up more space in your fermentor. This recipe requires the larger 7.9 gallon wine fermentor.

Old Vine Zin

Kit worked well in all respects.
Just bottled wine, and tasted, a few days ago. Wine is good this young, with a lot of potential after some aging. I think it will be great wine, just need some time to assess it.
The kit contents, quality and use gets 5 stars.
The wine? Only 4 stars at this point, just because you are asking me too soon. Anticipate 5 stars after maturing a bit.

8 Gallon Pail Not Big Enough

This is my second Master Vintner Sommelier Select kit with Skins. Because the bag of Skins is quite large, there was not enough room in my 8 gallon pail for fermentation. I purchased a 10 gallon pail for this one and had no problems.

Old Vine Zinfandel w/ Skins is just OK

So far I am somewhat disappointed in the product. Product would not clear so I racked it after 4 weeks and added Super Klear. It is now clearing. Not sure I would order this kit again.

Tasted it after racking and I am hoping that aging for a year will help it.

I have been making wine from kits and from scratch for over ten years and have not had a kit not clear before.

Excellent Track Record

I have made 12 batches of the Sommelier Select Old Vine Cab Sauv (4 1/2 have been consumed!), and these are excellent. Good after a few months, very good approaching year, and truly excellent now at 14 months. My extended inventory will allow me to test quality at 2 to 3 years. This first batch of Zin is only one month in the bottle waiting for 2022 to experience.
