Product details

Decidedly clean, firmly hoppy, and drinkably bitter. More than any other, this widely-imitated ale is responsible for bringing craft beer into the national consciousness and re-introducing America to real beer. Now it's a classic. And thanks to the fresh ingredients and expert know-how packed into this recipe kit, it's a classic you can brew and enjoy at home.

All of you out there currently enjoying that chocolate Bourbon-barrel-Brettanomyces continuously-wet-hopped Imperial black IPA, take a moment and say a silent "thank you" to the humble West Coast American Pale Ale. Sure, it might seem tame to your 21st century craft beer sensibilities and overloaded palate, but back when Northern Brewer was four dudes and a 20-foot storefront, this style was considered "extreme" beer -- and it's still going strong.

This isn't an ale that feels the need to jump up and down and scream for your attention. It's cooly confident you'll come looking for it when you're ready to appreciate the understated, so-much-more-than-basic beauty of a true classic.

From Chico, California to all points of the compass, whether you're pairing it with Mexican, burgers and fries, or just conversation, there's always a good time and a place for Sierra Madre Pale Ale.

Lost dog’s try at pale ale

Nice kit. Clear instructions and not overly complicated. Good idea I think, but in practice I was disappointed by the taste of the final product. I don’t think it was an error on my part, but just the result of a simple extract recipe. Beer is too sweet. The color was good. The hoppy flavor was good, but could have been a little more pronounced. If there was a way to get the beer a little dryer it would be a home run. For what it is, it’s a good kit, the beer turned out drinkable, just not great.

Good beer

Haven't brewed in several years but the old 80 year old brewer is back. This pale ale had great taste and once I got my keg regulated the beer didn't last long.

Sierra madre ipa

This will be my first time brewing an ipa. As with the caribou slobber, the directions were simple. I had liquid yeast this time and used the yeast starter the day before. I think everything went ok- I’ll know for sure in a week when I transfer the wort to the secondary fermentation carboy.

Fantastic. Turned out great!

Accurate order fulfillment

I appreciate Northern Brewer's regular sales on beer kits. I've been a decade long customer. The few times that there was an order problem, a simple phone call was all it took for them to fix the problem. I'm a satisfied customer
