Product details

An assertive black ale dominated by roast-coffee and chocolate character and hop bitterness. Northern Brewer's hometown gives its name to our robust porter kit - an assertive black ale dominated by roast-coffee and chocolate character and hop bitterness. Toffee-like maltiness and citrusy hop flavor are in there as well, with a medium-full body and lingering roast malt/hop bitterness before a bittersweet finish. We like spiking barbecue sauce with a splash of this porter; it also great with strong cheese like sharp cheddar or Stilton.

True to style

I brewed this about a month ago. I tapped the keg yesterday and this beer was a hit. It’s true to style, and I’m pleased with the recipe.

My review is really about the direction. I recently switched from extract to all grain. The directions you give with extract are very precious, step by step and easy to follow. But your all grain kits don't really give much direction at all. I have to watch YouTube videos as I'm brewing. I'm sure for the more experienced brewer it's not a big deal. But for people who are new to all grain it is. That being said, I have ordered pretty much all of my equipment and ingredients through Norther Brewer and have been very happy. I have even recommended your kits to others.
Thank you for what you do and for your time.

Solid Porter!

Back in my days of living in the Twin Cities, Summit's GNP was the a favorite. This recipe is a very good clone. Though I've not had the original in a while, I recall GNP to be a bit more complex in flavor than this clone. All in all very good, and will likely brew again. Made for some well appreciated xmas cheer passed to neighbors and friends.

Not too bad...

This kit came out more like a brown ale. But I'm not picky and it was the first batch I've brewed in awhile. So overall, very drinkable but not exactly what I had hoped for.
