Zero in on the most vital variable to perfecting your homebrew without the need for a thermowell—this 12" stainless steel temperature probe hangs suspended in your fermenting wort, signalling the ThermoStar® to raise or lower the temperature of your fermentation cave based on the actual temperature of your liquid, not the ambient temperature of the air around it.

Requires a drilled stopper that fits your specific fermenter.

Like 'em or not, they deliver...
I literally just received my 12" temperature sensor, so I haven't even had a chance to plug it in yet. Hopefully, it will work better than the one that came with my original Thermostar controller. I really wrote this review due to the fact that the probe that came with the controller went out and froze everything in my keezer. I contacted NB via their text support and within 30 minutes, "Tom" had responded and processed an order to send me a replacement (actually an upgrade to the 12" sensor) even though it had been over a year and a half since my original order. Whether you loathe the fact that "AB bought Northern Brewer" or are indifferent, it must be stated that the customer service is just as good as it was before the "partnership". I don't like "big beer" moving into the craft space any more than the next guy, but the incredible Northern Brewer customer service can't be denied. Thank you Northern Brewer! I'm still a lifetiime customer.

Nice product but NOT robust
I'm now on my third probe - the first two lasted 2 batches each, then started reading erratically (jumping from 60F to 140F to 220F over 5 seconds). At first I thought it was Krausen caking the probe, then I thought I cleaned it too aggressively, but some experimentation does not seem to bear out either theory. It is not my temp controller: the short probe still works perfectly. But when this probe does work, it becomes so easy to be nice to your yeast.

Great Purchase
The Temperature Sensor performs as advertised. It has been invaluable in controlling an extended fermentation and lagering process for an Oktoberfest. I should have had this all along.

As Advertised
I'm giving this 4 stars, instead of 5, simply for the small sample range I have - if this thing lasts a year or more without issue, I'll gladly give it the 5th star. Works just as advertised, easy to take on and off, easy to use. Have had no issues with it in my first ~4 weeks. Do remember to be gentle - stainless steel doesn't mean you can afford to whack it on the side of the carboy or anything. Treat with care and it should do you just fine.

Great product but fragile
Works great but you must treat with extreme care. Very easily damaged. My last one all of a sudden decided that my wort was at 165 instead of the 68 it had been just a few hours ago. I tried unplugging and plugging it back in but no joy.I do wish Northern Brewers offered a top to their buckets pre-drilled with a second grommet for for this probe. Finding the correct size grommet can be a pain.Still worth the effort for the end result. I'm ordering a replacement one today.

Response from Northern Brewer
Hey Matt! Thanks for the review. If you can drill a 5/8" hole in the bucket lid we sell the replacement grommets on the site. Product #6017

I saw you placed a new order for the probe. That item is warrantied for one year so if bought within then I can easily get you credit or a refund. I could not find the order though. Let us know!

I need replacemnet grommets and orings. This unit came with a tiny little grommet and oring(s) and I lost them during cleanup a few months back. Can I purchase replacements? Without all the little fittings the thermometer can't be used inside the fermenter to provide internal wort temperature control.

Is the probe tapered? If so Is the largest diameter of the probe the same diameter as the small probe that comes with the Thermostar unit or is it bigger?
L R on Oct 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Probe is the same diameter as the one that comes with the Thermostar

however it does come with a small tapered silicone stopper.
Can you use this with a plastic fermenting bucket with a lid that has a grommeted hole? E.g. https://www.northernbrewer.com/grommeted-lid-for-6-5-gal

Grommeted Lid For 6.5 Gallon Bucket
BEST ANSWER: When using the grommeted lid for primary or secondary fermentation one will also need a half full airlock to release pressure during the process
what diameter is the probe?
A shopper on Jul 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It seems to be 5mm across, measuring best I can.
Will this work with an inkbird controller?
A shopper on Jun 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: no, wrong connector type
Will this be able to control your entire carboy temperature without a chest freezer? For example, keeping it at constant temp (72 degrees) in a 90 degree garage?
G S on Jun 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The temperature controller will only turn on or off a cooling/heating device so by itself it can not change temperatures. But if you have some type of cooling system, like a fridge or freezer, it can make it whatever temperature you want for homebrewing.
What is the high temperature range of this probe? Can I use it to monitor my strike water temperature instead of standing holding the thermometer or trying to read the temp dial?
M O on Jun 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The display will go up to 300 degrees F, but the working range is up to 120 degrees F. This would not be a good model to monitor your strike water with, especially if you are not using an electric system since this would be used to control electrical output rather than just reading temperature.
Does this work with the Johnson temperature controller you sell on the NB site?
G R on Sep 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This probe is not compatible with the Johnson Controls products
