Product Details

You don’t need to test the gravity of wort or beer in order to brew successfully - after all, humanity brewed without these instruments for millennia - but it sure takes out a lot of guesswork. By performing simple (dare we say, fun) tests with this kit, you’ll be able to tell conclusively when fermentation ends (those airlock bubbles aren’t always reliable!) and calculate the alcohol content of your brews.

  • Herculometer™ - Triple Scale Hydrometer
  • Test Jar
  • Beer Thief

Hydrometer, sample thief and rack are good. The sample cylinder leaks and can't be used. Not worth the trouble to get replace. Order a starter kit a few years back and hydrometer was broke when I received it and didn't feel it was worth it then either. I am 0-2 when it comes to gravity test equipment. I would recommend buying this kind of items from you local brew supply if you have one available.

Works well for the price. Beer thief is a bit of a disappointment, but works well enough.

Hygrometer is good, but the rest is questionable
The hygrometer is fine and works, the hygrometer test vial is very fragile plastic. Mine has cracked at the top after my first batch. The 3 piece plastic wine thief is very cheap and does not seal well, therefore is does not work very well. I would suggest buying a hygrometer and save your money to buy the other parts that are more quality.

Awesome tool!
Being a new brewer, I was a bit scared to use it at first but once I did, it was simple and I had no problems

Good kit for beginners
Newbie brewer, and had no trouble using hydrometer and tube. Tube had slow leak, NB replaced it immediately. Yay! Good directions for use, happy. Have not tried the thief yet.

Straight to landfill
Cheap plastic toy. Test jar leaked at base - a lot. Could never use it once. Bought a glass test jar from Amazon.

Cheaply made at a low price
The hydrometer works well, the stand is a little flimsy, and the thief is useless - not air tight out of the box.

I will this hydrometer tell me the proof of my final product?
A shopper on Dec 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, if you take the per-fermentation reading and post fermentation reading and compare them (at 68 degrees liquid temperature, unless you have charts to correct for temperature variations - if not they are free online.) That is what it is for - and determining when your fermentation is complete of course.
What's the SG range on this hydrometer?
B R on Jan 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Brandon,

The range on this one is .990 to 1.160. If you'd like more specific ranges, I'd suggest the lab grade hydrometers.

Cheers!

Charles
Will this work for both wine and beer? I want to do cider later too, would I need it for that too?
Michael O on Dec 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I am using it for cider this year, Incan use all the info I can as this is my first attempt. Working good so far!!!
