Product details

Barley Wine is a huge ale with a huge malt bill and a huge hop load to balance it. This English-style Barley Wine has intense, concentrated malt flavor with vinous, dried fruit, and molasses notes laced with a charge of hop bitterness and a considerable alcohol content. There no better special-occasion beer - just brew a batch, wait, and congratulate yourself in six months or more.

Due to the high starting gravity of this kit, we recommend pitching multiple packs of yeast or preparing a yeast starter for best results.

Boozy Barley Wine

This is probably my sixth time brewing this kit. I like to soak oak chips with 750ml of bourbon for two weeks prior to the secondary. When racking, I dump all the oak chips and the 750ml of bourbon together and let sit for approximately three to four months. What I end up with is a nice boozy barley wine that is great for sipping. I believe the ADV is between 13 and 14%.

Hoppier than I expected, but very tasty

I was thinking this would be a malty barley-wine, but it tastes more like an IPA to me. It still tastes great. I'm really enjoying it. It is not overly hoppy. It's nicely balanced.

Good Tasting Beer

Barley wine is smooth and great tasting for a beer that clocks in at 13% ABV.

NB Barleywine

This is my fourth batch of this Barleywine. Three have turned out beautifally and the fourth will be bottled on New Years Day. I haven't been disappointed yet.

Barley Wine Recipe Kit

The only reason I'm giving NB a four instead of a five this time is due to a delay in getting my order ready for shipping. The kit itself was complete in every way and the barley wine is in its initial fermentation. I like to tweak the process a bit, adding about 2 oz. of homegrown Cluster hops, plus 2# of honey. Given the extra ingredients, I've rounded up to 6 gallons and split the batch into two fermenters. In 2-3 weeks, I'll recombine it and pitch some Champagne yeast to boost the alcohol content and ensure a successful bottle conditioning. TIP: Since I won't be sampling this until 2023, I suggest going light on whatever you use for carbonating; you don't want to end up with a barley whine after all of your hard work...
