What's new on the G30 Version 3:

  • Grain Basket Assembly:
The newly redesigned Perforated Edge Grain Basket on the G30³ features side wall perforations to improve wort flow and to prevent a stuck mash.
In addition to the redesigned grain basket, the new Rolled Edge Mash Plate filters the wort efficiently without warping. The new rolled edges mean that there is no need for silicone seals, making the plates much easier to install, remove, and clean.
The new grain basket and mash plate design means that there is no need for overflow pipework or a top plate, allowing for a hassle-free brew day.
  • Auto Reset Switch:
Lifting and reaching underneath the boiler to reset your electric homebrewing system is now a thing of the past! The new auto reset switch avoids needing a physical, manual switch to reset the system; ensuring homebrewers can quickly and easily resume their brew day if an unexpected reset is required.

Same Great Grainfather features:

  • Full Five Gallon Batch Capacity
  • 110 - 120 volt, 20 amp
  • 304-grade stainless steel superior body, with 8 US Gal (30 L) capacity
  • Expandable grain basket to suit grain bills up to 19.8 lbs (9kg)
  • A robust magnetic drive pump (6 watt, 1800 RPM) and wort recirculation pipe with insulated handle, ensuring consistent temperatures throughout the mash and maximizing efficiencies
  • Pump filter to keep hops and stray grain in the boiler, and your wort clear and bright
  • Counterflow Wort Chiller with copper inner coil, cooling your wort to <68°F within 20mins
  • Toughened plastic control box and display screen, giving you total temperature and pump control. Dial in the exact temperature for your mash, allowing both step mashing and single temperature mashing with very fast ramp up between steps
  • Dual heating element (1600 watt and 600-watt elements) allowing you to switch between heating quickly to a vigorous boil and maintaining a stable temperature
  • Tempered glass lid for maximum durability, heating efficiencies and visibility during your brewday
  • Dimensions: 29" H x 19.1" L x 17.2" W

Makes it simple

Ok, I've been brewing for a while. This has made things super simple. Between the awesome app that allowed me to just put in my recipes and times to run the machine and the overall easiness to work and clean. This gets an A++. What was an all day job (cooking and cleaning) has become a delight. I highly recommend this to anyone on the fence.

All grain brewing simplified

Works as expected. Made one batch that was successfully fermented, kegged and tasted, and another one that is still in the fermenter.
One vessel to mash, sparge and boil. Advice is to take it through "dry run" once you get it and assemble, going through brewing cycle and knowing what to expect - this also takes care of initial cleaning and gets it ready for the first real brew session. For example, knowing that initiating mash step would turn on the pump, so need to have the arm assembled and ready prior to that.
One consistent theme I saw prior to buying it is that 110v is "too slow" and recommendations on upgrading to 220v. I find time to bring water to mash temp and to boil adequate for me so no concerns here.
Once you position the kettle and fill it, you can't move it (really no handles to lift it with water/wort). So pick where you put it during brewing process wisely, better right next to the sink where you would connect CF chiller to.
One bug I encountered was that thermometer was a few degrees off. The wort was clearly boiling, but it was showing only 209F instead of 212F, and it was "stuck" there instead of recognizing that water is now boiling and switching to boil mode. I had to manually skip this process. Just requires some extra attention.
Cleaning is easy, especially if it is taken outside and hosed off right away after the brew session.
I was pretty much forced to switch brewing recipe/planning to grainfather app. I found it fairly easy to do. It is app only - there is no web access. I used my PC link to phone for planning recipes, entering ingredients, and phone (which pairs easy with grainfather over bluetooth) for brewing.

Game changer

The Grainfather G30 has changed my brew day experience. There were some initial challenges in set up and first brew, but watching a bunch of online videos helped. The Bluetooth connection to your mobile device makes brewing a snap. Recipes can be pre loaded and once you hit start it does everything for you. No need to stir the pot it circulates the brew for you, while maintaining the perfect temperature.

Great System, Intimidating at First

After much consideration, I purchased the Grainfather (120V) system. My thought was that it would be a 'coffee-maker that makes beer'. Add some water, grains, and push the button for good beer. It wasn't quite that easy. I have brewed 4 batches of all-grain beer since my purchase. Each time was a learning experience (dealing with a clogged check-valve a couple of times and forgetting to insert the bottom of the grain basket another time).
On the positive side, let me say that having temperature controlled by the system is awesome. No more tweaking of the burner or being afraid to leave the room. It does a fair job of controlling the temperature, with variations of a couple of degrees over the period of an hour (which are displayed on the phone app). I also like the graduations marked on the side of the Grainfather, though they are difficult to read when sparging. One has to lift the grain basket to see the markings and the level of the wort, which in my case, can be messy. Removing the grain basket when sparging is complete can also require some acrobatics to avoid a mess. The check-valve on the pump discharge tends to clog easily and has required interventions during brew sessions. It is easy enough to clean once you know how. In general, clean up of the Grainfather is fairly easy, though I do worry about the side drains on the grain basket. I give them a scrub from the inside with a toothbrush.
I have not spent the time to research using the app for automating a recipe. I have used it in manual mode and it works well.
Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. All four batches that I have brewed have turned out great. Each time I use it, I make fewer mistakes. On top of that, I am brewing more often.

Grainfather G30

Everything from Northern Brewer was fine. However, the unit had a defective rubber hose on the pump. After contacting NB they suggested I go through Grainfather for a replacement. They made me jump through many hoops(proof of purchase, numbers on the unit, pictures) before finally sending me a couple dollar replacement hose.
