Product details

Produced from quality Barke® two-row spring barley. Full-bodied, golden colored smooth tasting beers. Imparts malty notes to finished beer. Intended for ales and lagers. Flavor: intense malty-sweet, gentle notes of honey and nuts (almond, hazelnut).

Barke® is a variety with all-round advantages: In the malt and brew houses, it excels because of its large kernel diameter, good kernel homogeneity, good germination potential, superior diastatic power, excellent extract yield, high apparent attenuation, moderate levels of soluble nitrogen, and low beta-glucan values. In the finished beer, Barke® contributes a good body, a rich and deep malt aroma, and a creamy head with good foam stability.

A must have.

I would never brew a German lager without Barke malz in my grain bill.

A tad better than regular german malt

Has a nice slightly sweet bready character. The Barke malts seem to all have a little bit more malt sweetness, and definitely smell maltier. It's clearly a different barley strain because the kernels are huge compared to any other barley malt.

Robust and smooth taste

I love this malt for its smooth, sweet taste for German lager recipes.

Don’t forget about Vienna!

After reading the Andreas Krennmair book Vienna Lager, I was inspired to attempt one myself. Taking advice from the book regarding Anton Dreher’s 1870 product, I used over 90% Vienna malt and only a few small Cara-type additions for color/complexity. Brew day went very well, including two decoctions, and now I’m patiently waiting for the 8 week lager to complete. Very happy with the Barke Vienna.
