Great upgrade from plastic!
Very happy with this fermenter. Big enough that I have not had to use a blow off tube even with an imperial ipa. Easy to clean, lift and use.

Wish I would have bought sooner. Gives me to the ability to transfer right after the boil and use the wort chiller in the fermenter. Nice construction and easy to carry with the narrow frame and handles.

So far, so good.
Should work great. Just don't drop it. The stainless foil that its made of could easily dent . But then again, can't drop a glass carboy either.

Upgrade from buckets but some design flaws
I really wanted to love this. For the price it seems like a solid fermenter. The stopper hole was sharp and cut into by stopper a bit. NB sent me several to replacements but I wish it was smooth. The dip tube also DOES NOT rotate like other similar products. Also the valve is a tad hard to remove for cleaning. It’s an upgrade from buckets and looks cool so am happy to have it but wait for a NB discount code.

Really love the switch to stainless. Just finished using my fermentor for the first time. Only knock is that when I transferred my wort into it from my megapot I ended up getting alot of trub transferred with it. Dip tub ended up pulling some of that when I transferred to secondary.

So far... love
It just went into the fermy chamber, but i'm loving this thing.
If all goes well in the transfer, I may get a second.
The only thing i didn't like was all the connections are smooth.. there's no real way to torque anything down. That and I worry about gasket wear over time... so we'll see how long it last before leaks are an issue.
Overall though the quality is great. I grabbed it on a 15% sale w free shipping so it was a solid $100 less than the SS bucket, and not much difference honestly.

Putting another batch of Master Vintner wine (Old vines cab) in it today--this thing is awesome, and the isoflow pickup tube makes racking a snap.

Observations made during the receipt inspection.
The unit seems for the most part well made and should last a very long time. However, I wish to share some observations. The hole centered in the lid for the airlock plug is a stamp cut hole with a sharp edge. While I understand the need for keeping costs down, it seems a rolled edge, or something, would be a better option there.
The included hardware to attach the nice ball valve is all stainless steel and seems high quality.
However, the pipe threaded nipple which passes through the pot has no visible means to hold onto it while tightening the ball valve to it. It is not hex shaped to accommodate an external wrench, there are no flat sides, no female hex shape for an allen wrench, and no provision to use a face spanner wrench. If the parts kit had included a second jam nut that would greatly simplify assembly.
Also, since all the hardware provided is stainless steel, there is a concern with galling the threads during assembly or maybe later during disassembly for cleaning or other operations. I would consider using some sort of thread lubricant to avoid this issue.

Great Fermenter
I like these fermenters, I bought two and used them both. Anybody else have trouble getting the ball valve tight on the main body threads? I could barely get it on there before it unscrews the nut holding the main body tight to the wall of the fermenter. Any info would be appreciated. Northern Brewer is trying to resolve this for me, but maybe another buyer knows the solution.

First use
Just finished a primary fermentation of 6.5gal batch and looks like this will be a mix and forget fermenter. Vigorous action and no blow out.

Does this bucked has a conical base? Can you upload photos from inside?
A shopper on Dec 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is a flat bottom.
What makes this better than an SS Brew Bucket? Does it have any temp control options?
A shopper on Dec 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have an SS Brew Bucket. Advantages? Conical base, can be stacked; Disadvantages? More expensive, cheaper, smaller ball valve, flat lid (stacking, but less room for fermentation).
Can you stack them?
A shopper on Dec 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,
I would not recommend stacking these units. Cheers!
Can I get a larger size?i.e. 12-15 gal.?
A shopper on Dec 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi there, we do not sell this in a larger size. Cheers!
Can you heat it on a flame to sterilize?
A shopper on Dec 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I wouldn't... it's thin material. Good quality, but no good for direct heat.
I’m assuming the pickup tube is bent? Can you show a pic of that?
A shopper on Jan 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It is bent and removable. Can be rotated 360 degrees.
How high is the port from the interior bottom?
A shopper on Jan 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: abought two inches
Is it US made?
A shopper on Feb 22, 2018
I'm sold, but have a question about the pickup tube. Are the nut and pickup tube one piece, or separate? This way you can adjust the pickup depth.
A shopper on Apr 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The “pickup” tube just pushes into the assembly and can be removed just as easily. You can adjust it by rotating to you wanted depth.
How is this unit when it comes to cleaning it? Does it fit in the sink? Rinse wash outside with hose?
A shopper on Mar 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The tank is easy to clean. Rinse out the turb with a garden hose; throwing the turb and water in the composter as you rinse. Use a good soap (PBW), warm water, and a soft sponge to clean off the residue. Fits easily in a standard kitchen sink or laundry tub for cleaning and rinse. Used mine several times and glad I made the investment over plastic.
Would this have enough head space to support an 8 gallon batch?
A shopper on Mar 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, based on the volume scale inside the fermenter 8 gallons has 1-5/8 inches of room to the top edge. The lid is also domed upward another 2 inches for extra volume and should keep your airlock above the process.
Is there any way to add a thermowell to this item?
A shopper on Jan 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: A person could use the "stopper thermowell" on it, through the top airlock hole. ( Our SKU 40054 ) That would be the simplest way to go! You can then have a temp probe set up in that thermowell.
Can you dump the trub through the bulkbead or harvest yeast from it , or would this clog it up?
A shopper on Mar 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for contacting Northern Brewer. I understand you wonder if you can drop trub through the Ball Valve. Not really, due to the design of the fermentor, you would need a way to collect it from the bottom, like a conical design. However, the ball valve does make it really east to transfer your brew to another fermentor or a bottling bucket. Cheers!
I'm looking for dual-purpose vessel to use as HLT and fermentor. Is this stainless induction compatible? (will a magnet stick to the bottom?) and will it sit flat on a glass cooktop? The pics make it look like its sitting on some kind of spacer ring or base... thx
A shopper on Feb 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This would not be right for that use. This is only intended to be a fermenter, and it would not be used to heat in for use as a HLT. It does not sit flat on the bottom, so it would not work on an induction cooktop or a glass cooktop.
What makes this better than a SS Brewtech Brew Bucket? Does this have a temp control option?
A shopper on Feb 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No temp control and I would say it's as good but cost less
What size tubing would fit the valve barb?
A shopper on Jan 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: the barb is for .5" tubing.
Is it pressure rated?
Michael M on Jan 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It is intended for fermentation, so it can handle the slight pressure increase from that, but ultimately it is not intended for pressurization.
Does the dip tube rotate? To avoid pulling trub into keg?
A shopper on Jan 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The dip tube position can be changed. You can position it to draw as cleanly as possible from the fermenter.
Does it come with the valve and dip tube pictured?
A shopper on Jan 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,
It does come with the valve and dip tube. Cheers!
Can this be pressurized with CO2 to transfer to kegs?
Josh D on Jan 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: We don't have a specific fitting to attach CO2 to it for this purpose, but the unit itself ought to be sealed up well enough that if you rig up a CO2 source to pressurize it at the top, you should be able to then push the fermented beer out via the ball-valve for a pressurized transfer to a fermenter.
How are the graduated marks made? Are the handles welded or riveted?
Michael F on Jan 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The volume markings are etched in and the handles are spot welded.
What diameter hose does this take?
A shopper on Mar 22, 2018
Question on the Sovereign lid: no photos from top of lid, so what's the actual design/construction? No TC furrle I'd assume? Is their a short, raised section where airlock plug inserts? I'd like to modify lid for one of my weldless PR TC pressure fitting for transfer straight to keg. If I'd need to braze on a TC furl that's be OK but would like to know up front..... Top view photo would be suggested for item.
Tim F on Feb 12, 2018
How’s the lid constructed where stopper is inserted? No photo’s, no info. Having 2 SSBT conicals already, I’d like to install weldless tri-clover fitting through hole in lid, or braze in if needed. The basic lid config info would be helpful.
