Mead Making
Mead is a wine made from honey and is possibly mankind's original fermented beverage. Making mead requires quality honey, yeast, and additional fermentation nutrients for the right fermentation. Traditional meads can be dry, semi-sweet, or sack sweet depending on your preference. But don't stop there. Homemade mead can be made with the addition of apples (cyser), Fruit (melomel or berry mead), wine grapes (pyment), spices (metheglin), or even malted barley (braggot).
Interested in learning how to make mead at home? Our homebrew mead making kits yield three or five gallons and can be brewed using supplies from a beer or wine making equipment starter kit. Of course, we also carry all of the mead making supplies you'll need, from fermenters to yeast nutrients.
For melomels with fruit, we recommend an extra-large primary fermentor of 7 to 8 gallons.
Be sure to take a look at our NB Artisanal Mead Kits, made with Ames Farm's amazing honey — these are simple and traditional mead recipes designed to let the honey shine through. Because the floral sources and composition of Ames Farm honey will change with the season and years, and are dependent on variables like hive placement and weather, every batch of these kits will be unique.
