Product details

Bourbon barrel-aged beers have been a hugely popular style ever since American craft brewers first started exploring this deliciously innovative technique in the 1990s. And the results of those experiments have only become more sought-after over the past decades.

We've packed the best elements of the style, along with the finest ingredients, into a foolproof recipe kit that brings the best of the craft breweries to you. By starting with a stronger-than-average robust porter, then infusing it with bourbon-soaked oak (we recommend Maker's Mark), the end result is quite possibly the best beer ever.

You'll have to supply your own bourbon, so be sure to save a little to sip on brew day to really capture the spirit. The intense aroma and flavor of toasted American oak and the sweet graininess of good bourbon meld with the bittersweet roastiness of porter to make for a very characterful beer.

Due to the high starting gravity of this kit, we recommend pitching multiple packs of yeast or preparing a yeast starter for best results.

First taste of bourbon barrel porter...

brewed this batch with 8 days in primary with White Labs WLP007; split in half for 4 weeks in secondaries. used half (1.5 oz) of the oak cubes in 8 oz EWBIB for one portion and 1.5 oz oak cubes in EWBIB that had been extracting vanilla beans for several weeks + 3 vanilla beans. Now 9 days in keg. First impression is that the vanilla balances flavors a bit better, but both are a bit more oaky than ideal. Not too far off from Founders KBS though?
We’ll see if it mellows with age in keg. if i brew again i might dial back on the oak and perhaps dial up the vanilla.

Bourbon Barrel Porter

This recipe is a favorite. I've brewed it multiple times both extract and all grain. Best if aged at least as long as the instructions. Even better when aged a few weeks more.

Second Purchase

I haven't brewed this one yet but, that last one was GREAT. I only have 1 or 2 bottles left. It aged VERY well. (I have pretty much been adding extra 2lbs of base malt to NB kits. )

Great kit

I've made this one several times, and it's always a very tasty beer. Great service, as always.

Turned out really well

I used the entire amount of oak chips soaked in makers mark for a couple months, put all 16oz in. I was worried it would be overpowering, but after four weeks in the keg, it’s really smooth and the oak/Makers Mark just hi light the flavor. It will sneak up on you though as the final ABV was right at 11!
