Product details

Bourbon barrel-aged beers have been a hugely popular style ever since American craft brewers first started exploring this deliciously innovative technique in the 1990s. And the results of those experiments have only become more sought-after over the past decades.

We've packed the best elements of the style, along with the finest ingredients, into a foolproof recipe kit that brings the best of the craft breweries to you. By starting with a stronger-than-average robust porter, then infusing it with bourbon-soaked oak (we recommend Maker's Mark), the end result is quite possibly the best beer ever. You'll have to supply your own bourbon, so be sure to save a little to sip on brew day to really capture the spirit. The intense aroma and flavor of toasted American oak and the sweet graininess of good bourbon meld with the bittersweet roastiness of porter to make for a very characterful beer.

Due to the high starting gravity of this kit, we recommend pitching multiple packs of yeast or preparing a yeast starter for best results.

Bourbon Barrel Porter

This kit is always my favorite. Never disappointed !! I’ve tried different bourbons in secondary fermentation. **** Creek is still #1.
Thank you,
Gerard

Excellent Brew

As always, the kit provided exactly what was needed (product and instructions). The smoked oak chips provided a very "bourbon cask" taste. Lots of complements from friends and family!

Awesome kit, brew it 2-3 times each year

I used to brew a ton, then life got in the way.
This kit is still a staple for me brew every 3-4 months, I like the way the brew ages, both in carboy and bottles. Always a hit when I pull a big bottle out of this for friends. I have found the type of bourbon really doesn't matter, Beam works fine, you don't need to get too fancy

Love this Kit. My wife’s favorite

This one really hits the mark. I love it and so does my wife. I use Evan Williams Black. Reasonably priced and still a good Bourbon.

I also add about 16 oz of coconut to the secondary. ( be sure to use unsweetened) and I toast it slightly. Just adds a hint of coconut flavor.

Anyone else try this? Anyone using Coconut extract? Think I might be able to get a little stronger coconut flavor that way. But like it with the toasted flavor.

Big Reaction

My wort after the boil was 1.044 instead of the suggested 1.054. I may have been a bit short on getting all of the malt in so probably my fault on that. My bigger problem was the speed and volatility of the fermentation. It took off within a few hours and went like crazy. Within a few hours I had to change the airlock to a blow tube. It was quickly overflowing into the water bath. The reaction stopped as fast as it started and after 24 hours it was completely over. I thought it had stalled and tried to get it going again but no luck. The final ABV was only 3%. After adding the bourbon it will be closer to 6 so not terrible I guess. On the plus side the flavor and aroma are very nice. After conditioning in the bottles for a few months I’m sure it will be delicious.
