Block Party Amber Ale: Gather up the neighbors and block off the streets, it's time to bring out some pints! Deep garnet glow. Friendly flavors of toasty bread crust, caramel, and an inkling of floral and herbal hop character. A true crowd pleaser.
4 stars right now. We are still fermenting brew, one more week before bottling. We are excited! The Electric brew kit has been easy to use, instructions can be confusing. We had to use some common sense to get through some steps.
After we have drank our brew we will consider 5 stars 😌
Husband likes it so far
Working great but just takes a long to to bring up to boil.
I got this for my husband’s birthday and he loves it!
This reviewer seldom reviews products online, but an exception was in order due to the uniqueness of this product and due to the questions and unexpected events that new brewers might be able to clarify for each other. The product is solid and the electric kettle is especially nice looking. One thing that buyers should realise is that, with this electric kettle, you are basically getting something similar to what they brew coffee or hot water with in a church or other public meeting space. (In fact, the reviewer wondered if a used one of those might accomplish the same.) The valve is a better quality, though, and there is an electronic thermometer. You might want to set aside an "assembly day" before your "brew day," since there are a lot of valves and washers that take awhile to figure out and install. You might also want to staple together all of the loose instruction papers that come with the different components (a single bound booklet might be a possible idea for the future). During the first brew attempt, the water was already at a rolling boil when the temperature read 209, instead of 212 degrees Fahrenheit. This led to the "science question" of whether water can under some circumstance boil before 212, or whether it indicated that the electronic thermometer was unreliable. When the brewer added the molasses, at some point it scorched to the bottom of the kettle, which was only revealed later upon draining and cleaning. At the recipe-recommended 218 degrees, it was constantly about to boil over unless the lid remained off. Therefore, this reviewer's best advice is, back off on the temperature setting a bit if you notice anything like this. The working theory right now is that the thermometer was off, but that may not be the case with other units. You have to hit the "set" button again, dial in the new temperature, and then wait about 5 seconds for the new temperature to take. More than once, the inclination was to hit the "set" button a second time to set the new temperature, but actually you have to just wait 5 seconds. Another unanswered science question is whether or not a slightly different cooking temperature is going to change the final flavour of the product; this is still unknown to this reviewer, but again it seems better to back off than to scorch or boil over (and again, both happened here). It wouldn't hurt to boil a batch of plain water before your brew day just to see at what temperature reading your kettle boils. A final head's up about this product is this: If you bought one of the other kits you'd be cooking in a big metal pot on your stove. You'd wash that out just like you wash the rest of your dishes and pans, right? But how will you wash this out given that you cannot submerse the electronics under water? (This also means that you may not be able to cool your wort like they demonstrate in the Northern Brewer instructional videos online, since you can't really stick this thing into a sink of ice water. Possibly, you could surround it by ice in non-leaking bags.) Anyway, the reviewer had to hoist the kettle into the bathtub and scrub and wash out the inside only with a clean sponge. A garden house outdoors might be another option. The outside was wiped with a damp cloth until the shine returned. Just bear the cleaning process in mind as you decide which starter kit to buy. The great advantage of this kit is that you could brew out on your patio, at a park campsite with electricity, or on the opposite side of your kitchen from a busy stove area. Overall, this was a solid product and it is highly recommended if the electric portability is what you are looking for. Keep in mind that most kits don't include bottles and you might be surprised how pricey empty bottles are from various sellers online--it wouldn't hurt to recycle and sterilise old glass bottles for a few weeks before your unit arrives!
