Speckled Heifer Partial Mash Beer Recipe Kit
Those among us who are or were farm-boys and -girls will correctly identify them as Holsteins; to the rest of the citified, sissified world, they're spotted cows.
This multigrain Midwestern take on the American cream ale is an uncomplicated, unfussy, lovable guzzler. Pouring straw gold with a snowy pillow of froth, the nose is gentle and sweet, full of its constituent blend of malted and flaked barley and corn, and the flavor is more of the same.
Hops give a little whisper of flowers and spice from the background. A tranquil time-out in a pint glass, a pastoral idyll, a sociable session ale dairyland-style: hey, sometimes a beer is just a beer. Have one.
This is a partial mash beer kit - see our Partial Mash Walkthrough for details.
In addition to the equipment required for malt extract brewing (boiling kettle, primary fermenter, siphon, etc.), you will need the following to brew our partial mash kits:
- A thermometer with a range that includes 120°-170°F
- A mash kettle - a pot with a capacity of at least 4 gallons (the boiling kettle you already have can do double duty)
- A second pot or kettle with a capacity of at least 2 gallons for heating sparge water
- A large strainer or a nylon mesh bag that can hold up to 5 pounds of wet grain (used to separate the grain from the mash liquid in Step #8)

The first time I brewed this I followed the recipe and I got very good reviews from those that tried it. The second time I decided to deviate and I put 0.5# toasted coconut in the last 10 minutes of the boil and then fermented as normal and then dry hopped two weeks later with 0.5# more toasted coconut and the beer was phenomenal I got such great reviews with the toasted coconut. The toasted coconut was there on the aroma and added creaminess and it was very noticeable with the aftertaste.
My first partial mash kit. While brewing I thought I definitely messed it up. The beer turned out amazing!! All of the family and friends think its the real Spotted Cow when we do blind taste tests with them! Thanks! Definitely will be reordering this in the future!
all kit should default to having some yeast in.
instructions sheet say that has a default yeast. and you yeast was twice the price of my local shop.
I brew this often as it taste good and one of only a few partial mash recipes from northern brewers. Wish they would scale more recipes to partial mash
This was my first norther brewer kit. I had previously brewed “Brewers Best” kits only. The beer was tasty, the instructions were clear, the contents were well packaged, the price was right. I would definitely buy another Norther Brewer recipe kit.
