I was concerned about the order that the o rings and washers were in shipping this Thermometer. Order didn't make sense so I ended up with the metal washer/shim against the hex grip, then one o ring, then through pot wall, then o ring and retaining nut. Two boils already with no leaks and tight enough for no dial spin. Temp was on target with my digital probe. A little pricey and bad documentation left it just below perfect.

Cooled wort in an ice bath and the thermometer leaked.

Mine also came with my megapot and there were no instructions. Fortunately I found some instructions on the web site. However, the threads on the back of the thermometer are not continuous, but rather there is a non-threaded "shoulder" before the threads start. The washer was not thick enough to take up this space, and I could not tighten the locknut enough to seal it. I had to get an additional, thicker washer. Fingers crossed for no leaks.

Great when it works
I have had 2 of these fail on my sparge kettle. I know I am not over heating them because the handle on the valve just below it hasn't even had the rubber get soft. Useless!

Not a fan
Came with my megapot. No instructions and it's a challenge to get on without it leaking. Opened a ticket asking why NB switched from the much better blichmann, and they said it was easier for them to drill one hole size.....meh.

Thanks for the review Scott. I don't think that was the main/only reason

though it is nice to keep hole consistent. These are meant as reviews of products so we would love to psot your review

but would ask that it refrain from reviewing customer service at the same time. can you resubmit with only product review

WE'd be happy to help troubleshoot getting a leak free seal..sometimes takes a couple tries and there is some things to try to help get it to seal better

we'd be happy to help with that.

Must have for brew-pots
I have one of these and one of the Brewmometers. This is essentially the same product, $3 cheaper, and without the nifty labeling. What is three-bucks worth to you?Like the Brewmometer, stop about 3-5 degrees before you hit your target temp, because the thermometerÕs dial will rise as the bi-metal probe expands to the actual temperature and moves the dial. You can always start back up the heat on a lower setting to dial in the tempature to where you want it if you stop short of your target.Quality is fine, but I wish the thermometerÕs glass was shatter resistant. Just be careful when throwing the pots around or you will break the glass on the dial if it bumps something too hard.

Mine got water in it in ice bath while chilling wort what do I do to get the water out without breaking it?

I've two Fermenter's Favorites, one has been used to brew twice, one has never been used. On both thermometers, the dial jumps around even giving a little flick to the face plate. Is that normal?

BEST ANSWER: I had to replace mine for the same reason.
How do I get water out of the thermometer?
A shopper on Jul 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have had moisture in the thermometer before and after use and cleaning I allow to dry in the sun. Seems to work ok, just don't leave out overnight or will have moisture again. Second, if the thermometer will fit in a bag with uncooked rice , that should do the trick too. Cheers.
The thermometer does not come with any mounting instructions. However I see two o-rings and a large washer are included. Also the nut has a groove in it, presumably to seat the o-ring. Where is the washer intended to be placed to make this functional?
A L on Dec 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I put the big washer just behind the dial, then an O-ring, then the kettle wall, another O-ring, and lastly the nut. The big washer exerts even pressure on the outside O-ring to affect a good seal.

I got one with a Megabot. No instructions to install???? It doesn't tip to read it without getting level with it. Do you make one that tips up to read it like the Blickmann?

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! The installation of the thermometer is almost identical to the installation of the bulkhead. I do not believe we have installation instructions for the thermometer written up. We do sell an adjustable thermometer with the edelmetall kettles

and that can be special ordered via phone at 1-800-681-2739. I hope this helps

have a great evening!
What is the accuracy?
A L on Sep 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It is accurate to within 2 degrees and can be calibrated for precision.
The flat head screw in the back for adjusting won't budge at all. Any suggestions on how to turn it to get the temp to an accurate reading without stripping the flat head screw?
