Product details

A spinoff of our highly popular Nut Brown Ale kit that combines American malts, hops and ale yeast with honey.
What would happen if you augmented the slightly dry, caramelly and roasty character of a smooth, mellow English brown ale with the sweet floral flavor of honey? What if you added the honey at the very last possible minute to maximize its presence in the finished beer? What if it was delicious? This recipe is a spinoff of our highly popular Nut Brown Ale kit that combines American malts, hops and ale yeast with honey. A well-balanced and intensely drinkable beer.

Nice Brown Ale

This turned out to be a great brown ale. The honey in the kit was crystallized, but nothing that a couple hours in warm water didn't take care of. This keg wont last long!

Nice brown

Great color, great taste. Not sure why this gets bad reviews. It's a Brown. It looks like a brown and tastes like a brown, with of course a nice taste of honey.

Like but honey needs work

Only problem I have with this recipe is the honey was crystalized and was not able to dissolve the sugar lump so had to add some of my own wildflower honey.

When honey crystallizes, it is still as nutritious and sweet as ever! In fact, the crystals prove that your honey is high quality and hasn’t been processed. It means that nutritious pollen hasn’t been filtered out and important enzymes haven’t been damaged by pasteurization. Filling a bowl with warm water to let your bottle rest until the crystals dissipate could help with your next batch but we commend your quick adjustment to use your own honey.

What I Expected From a Honey Brown

Easy drinking with very light hop after taste. Beginning SG was 1.055. Used the dry Safale US-05 yeast and fermented at 64 degrees. After 4 weeks measured higher than I expected at 1.021. Usually use Beer Smith for more detail instructions but used Brewers Friend this time. Did not transfer to a secondary. (the beer club I joined recommended not transferring unless you are really leaving it in the fermenter for extended time). Next step is sharing with some friends and getting their feedback and of course just enjoying a glass.
