Vanguard Hops

Vanguard is a noble-style American aroma hop, bred by the USDA and released in 1997. Developed as a descendant of Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Vanguard offers a refined balance of earthy, floral, and spicy aromas. Its low cohumulone content contributes to a smooth bitterness, making it an excellent choice for traditional European-style lagers and ales.

Vanguard Hops Overview

  • Flavors: Herbal, woody, cedar, mild spice, floral
  • Primary Usage: Aroma (late kettle additions, dry hopping)
  • Best Beer Styles: Kölsch, Pilsner, Helles, Bock, Belgian Ale, Cream Ale, Amber Ale
  • Similar Varieties: Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Liberty, Mount Hood, Saaz

Background

Vanguard was developed to emulate the noble characteristics of Hallertau Mittelfrüh while offering improved agronomic traits. Its unique oil profile, dominated by humulene, imparts a pronounced woody and herbal character atop a definitive spiciness. Vanguard's versatility and refined aroma make it a valuable addition to a variety of beer styles.

My favorite hops

I enjoy the floral, citrus, and fresh cut grass aromas of these hops while in the package. The low alpha content allows the floral aromas the shine after brewing and the earthy grass notes convert to flavor especially in blonde ales or kolsch when used as the aroma hop.

Dual Purpose

Nice aroma, good flavor and battering qualities, as its Hallertau lineage would suggest. I purchased 8 oz of Vanguard hops because of their versatility for lager brewing. I’ve used them as a bittering addition for a Czech pale lager, and a 30 minute addition for a higher alcohol pale lager. If there are shortages of certain noble hops (which was a possibility in April), varieties such as Vanguard and Perle can fill in the gaps.
