Waiting patiently, but still have a word to share.
My brew is still in the fermenting stage. I can't wait to bottle, condition, and then finally taste this brew. I'm only giving 4 stars because, I haven't tried it yet and that this said in the description that it had 2 dry hop additions, yet in the instructions, it doesn't. I'm a little bummed about this. Unless I read them wrong.

I have really enjoyed it in the past. I have not sampled my last batch, but anxiously waiting to give it a whirl when it's ready. I have purchased 3 Plinian Legacy small batch recipe extract kits in one years time.

First Brew
Got this with my 1G starter kit. NB makes the process very easy to follow so that it's basically idiot-proof. I opened my first bottle last night and was pleasantly surprised that it actually tasted good! Compared with store bought IPAs, it held its own in terms of flavor and body. I'd definitely recommend this kit and I'll be back for more soon.

Yeast failed
I ended up with a failed fermentation. It started ok and then died. I thought it had just gone fast, but after bottling and resting (bottle conditioning) I have a batch that is headed for the kitchen sink. I did a stout the same day and it turned out great.

Oooohhh man... the hops... the HOPS!!!
I am not a huge IPA fan, but I wanted to go through the process of making one to see how it tasted along it's life. I will say that this is a pretty tasty brew.
It is smells and initially tastes very citrusy... almost like a semi sweet grapefruit. It then turns to quite the bitterfest as the hops kick in. I like it much more than I though I would. A friend of mine who is a huge IPA snob and who did not have a whole lot of belief that I could produce a drinkable IPA was quite surprised and impressed with the beer.

Very hoppy with this beer
You must like hops and lots of them. This beer tasted good out of the fermenter at bottling, now going to have to wait for bottles to carb up.

Very Hoppy!
This was my second brew and I was really worried about how it might turn out. I'm not a big fan of IPA's but got this in the starter kit.

This was pretty resistant to brewing errors and has turned out very well. Lots of different flavors in the beer. If you love IPA's, then, can't recommend this enough!

Ok so where do I start. This my first small batch kit from Northern brewer and actually the first kit from Northern Brewer I actually have gotten to taste. (There are a few in the works just waiting for me to drink). So i guess ill start with the brewing process everything went great followed the awesome instructions given in the kit and any question I had no matter how much I made have seem like a noob the guys at norther brewer answered quick and very friendly. BLOWOFF TUBE NECESSARY for like the first 3 days hops and foam were exploding from the gallon fermentor so i'm happy I started with one. Bottled at 1 week and 5 days and conditioned bottles at 70 degrees F for about a week and 5 days.(I have a 70 degree storage room at work). Carbed up real good! I tested the Original brix on a refractometer at work and it was 23.55 final brix 11.9 so abv was 10.23%, and it showed, strange cause the 5 gallon version should have 7.5% abv. This beer is clean and crisp but has a hop forest inside of it which I love and which helped cover the alcohol really well. There was a good hop bitterness along with a great piney earthy notes upfront and a slight citrus aftertaste. I will make this again the 1 gallon and hopefully it 5 gallon version. i know that was alot so im done now ok bye!

What exactly are the weights and types of the steeping grains? I am getting ready to brew this and am trying to learn how the different types of grain effect the final product.

I am ordering this as a gift. How long will it be good for? Do I have to worry about it expiring?

BEST ANSWER: This kit will be shipped with crushed grain; the grain is good for 3-5 months with no problem. After that long, the crushed grain may begin to get a little stale. It can still be used, but it's better if brewed up while fresh. All the other components would be good for much longer than that.
Do 1 gallon kits com with yeast??
B A on Dec 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes they do. One pack of dry yeast. Use 1/2 of the pack for the one gal. Brew
Just brewed a batch of this today. My OG came out to 1046. In the past I have usually came a lot closer to the stated OG. As usual, after siphoning my wort into a 1 gallon jug, filled only about 80%, I filled with water to the mark. Could that have diluted it enough to change the OG?
A shopper on Jun 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Perhaps so. If you had gotten all the fermentables into the batch, it ought to be very close to the stated OG. But if some was "lost" by not getting all the wort into the jug, you could be leaving some of the good wort behind. I'd always try hard to get all the wort into jug, even if some of the sediment makes it into the jug. You can even pour it into the jug through a funnel, that would be fine at this stage. If this is done, it should be much closer to the stated OG when the kit is started fermenting.
Just got the kit! Very excited to brew. Does this beer (1 Gallon extract kit) have an aggressive fermentation? Will I need a blowoff tube? I see the recipe adds priming sugar at burnout. Just want to be prepared!
Gregg K on Jan 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I skipped the priming sugar at that step and it still came out really nice. Even without the extra sugar it had a pretty healthy fermentation for 3 or 4 days. I used a 5 gallon fermentor for this 1 gallon batch and had no issues.
Are the hop amounts in the instructions correct? Should it be in grams or ounces? It states grams. Seems high for a 1 G kit.
Gregg K on Jan 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is grams. This is a double IPA, and most certainly has an abundance of hops. Tomorrow is bottling day so I am unable to give you any details on taste, but it had an incredible hop aroma on cook day. Hope this helps
1 week into fermentation I have a ring of hoppy sludge at the top of my jug left over from the bubbling fermentation - do I swirl it into the mix or leave it?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: leave it on the bottom. you do not want this in your brew. When you bottle you will want to make sure you dont suck that up into the bottles.
Does the 1g kit get dry hopped? I see the 5g version has two dry hoppings.
A shopper on Dec 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,
There is no dry hopping in this recipe kit. Cheers!
The laminated instructions say to start with 1.25 gallons of water, so does the video. But the instructions for this particular beer says 1.5. I am assuming that I start with 1.5?
A shopper on Nov 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I started with 1.5 and it turned out well.
I'm going to condition in a growler, how many fizz tablets do I use for a 64oz growler?
A shopper on Oct 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: 1 per 12 ounces so 5.333... I would go with 6, IPA can handle a little higher carbonation in my opinion.
Is there a place we can see the OG or est ABV for this?
Jonathon S on May 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The estimated OG for this is 1.070 (on additional information tab) and the ABV will depend on the specific fermentation, but it should finish around 6% ABV.
I'd like to sub out the extract for grain. Can you offer what the replacement grain malt would be?
A shopper on Jan 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Pilsen malt syrup so use pilsner malt!
Is there a list of what this kit includes somewhere? I can't seem to find one...
