A little flimsy and leaks
Finally tried it out and it leaks. The cooler is a little flimsy and so when actuating the ball valve it must have adjusted the fitting around the O rings. Started leaking through the bottom of the O ring creatin a huge mess. Maybe I just need to tighten the O rings more? Either way I wish it were a bit more solid.
False bottom has low diameter and does not stay flush with the bottom of the cooler which can result in grains escaping into the boil pot.

I am very pleased with my mash tun. Definitely helped bring my efficiency up and has improved quality of the finished product. The instructions included I also found to be concise and very helpful. Some assembly was required though, contrary to the " ready to use out of box " description given. Overall I am pleased with this purchase. ð???ð??½

4.5 Stars - Great Mash Tun!
The only missing piece is the gallon markings on the inside. I fill it from the valve with a pump from my brew kettle. I can measure down from the brew kettle, but it would be easier to just look at the mash tun and know I pumped in the correct amount of water.

As other reviewers stated, the valve assembly did not go on as easy as the instructions made it seem. Took me some trial and error to eliminate leaks, but finally got it.

I pre-heated with ~132 deg water and it held 156 deg mash temp for 45 mins with ease. Was also easy to clean up.

Nice Mash/Lauter Tun
I haven't used it yet, but it looks great. My only worry is that the plastic around the ball valve bends with each turn of the valve. I'm worried that the plastic will fatigue and crack and the cooler will leak.

Great product. Work well!
Great product guys. Thank you! The only suggestion I have is for better instructions on installing the valve.

Can't complain so far
I'm trying all grain brewing for the first time on a tight budget so I went with this cooler for my mash tun. My only complaint so far is that the valve did not go on anywhere near as easily as the instructional video from Northern Brewer demonstrates. That being said, once the valve was installed, I was able to brew a batch with no leaks or issues. The cooler also did a great job maintaining my mash temperature so in the end, it does the job.

Mash tun
I purchased this mash tun to replace my old coleman (25 yrs.). I think the addition of 1 gallon markings would be nice on the inside because I fill it from the valve with a pump. Works great.

First (and probably last) Mash/Lauter Tun
Definitely a worthwhile purchase. Just be sure to pre-thermo the tun with a gallon of hot water swished around in order to properly hit your mash temps. Easy to assemble. Easy to clean up. Holds temps extremely well.

I am using the 10G all grain brew kit from NB. I'm having issues during the sparge. The mash tun hose barb is too small. The wort barely trickles out even with the ball valve open full. I have tried this with just water in the mash tun with no grains and it still just trickles out. I'm using the materials that came with the kit. It seems like the inside or outside barb hose fitting needs to be bigger to create a better flow. Suggestions?

BEST ANSWER: Hello Dean,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! Is the tubing running from the false bottom to the inside hose barb fit snuggly on each hose barb? Also have you tried back flushing the mash tun to ensure that there is nothing blocking the flow? The 3/8" hose barbs are plenty large enough to get a good flow of wort, so I am thinking there is something else going on here. Can you by chance send in a a picture of how things are hooked up? That way we can better troubleshoot the issue at hand here. Let me know and we will get it figured out!
If I only brew 5 gallon batches, would the 7 gallon cooler suffice?
D F on Feb 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The 7 gallon coolers can handle a nice high gravity mash so is what we recommend for most 5 gallon batch size all grain brews. Anything over like 1070 - 1090 should probably be 'partial mash' and make up the difference with DME/LME, just more practical, and the 10 gallon coolers would ahave extra head space and a little more temp loss during the mash rests - so I would go 7 gallon. I hope this helps!
Are the lids screw on?
A shopper on Jan 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, takes about two turns from start to finish
Does the mash tun have a screw on lid?
A shopper on Jan 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does and it works very well
what is the lauter dead space for this set-up?
isaiah p on Jun 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If you gravity drain the Mash Tun from at least a 3ft higher then the secondary vessel, there is almost no loss with the included false bottom, other than grain absorption which is a given. Just make sure to open the valve slowly to avoid a stuck mash and it will create a vacuum affect that will empty almost all the wort. I've never used a pump to drain mine, but I would image it would be as efficient if not a little more.
How tall is the cooler ?
A shopper on Aug 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The 7 gallon is 19" in height with the lid on. The 10 gallon is 21.25" in height with the lid on.
Does the 10 gal. Tun have an airlock port?

How long can this mash tun hold a steady mash temperature for?
J A on Jun 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It will easily be able to hold your mash temperatures for the full hour and more; customers report, and we have found, that it works great and holds temp very well. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
I was wondering if it would be possible to add a thermometer. Possibly before the ball valve?
J R on Apr 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Perhaps, but it would not be easy, and might cause all sorts of problems as you'd need to drill through the insulated side of the cooler. You'd almost certainly have to use some sort of silicone to seal the hole. One way to add a thermometer to a tun is through the lid; it's safer to drill there and it won't be a leak-point. A person could use a long-probe digital thermometer, if it would reach down to the grain, or have a wired probe in the tun via a hole in the lid. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Can anyone tell me how tall this is without the lid? Trying to configure a 3 tier rack and want to figure out how high this will sit.
R O on Mar 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Fermenter's Favorites Cooler Mash/Lauter Tun is 18-5/8" high w/ lid on and 17-7/8" w/ lid off.
Can this mash tun be drilled and modified for an electric HERMS system?
Jason B on Jan 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don’t think it’s a good idea. Try another equipment to do that, such as a stainless steel kettle instead. Instruction says to do not drill it, also it’s perfect if you follow a plan to ramp up your temperature adding hot water. You won’t need an electric system. It keeps same temp for 1 hour when closed.
I have a smaller 5 gallon cooler and I would like to know if it fits inside this one for storage. What are the internal dimensions for this cooler?
A shopper on Jan 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Inside diameter of this cooler is 11.25" .
Can I upgrade this to a stainless steel value?
